Title: Does Size Matter?
Post by Sgt Heffner on 05/30/08 at 18:49:51

I am considering buying a 650 Suzuki Savage. I have not seen it yet but will soon. But I was wondering - does anybody know if a 6'3" guy will look silly on it? Will it be comfortable? Anybody this tall or taller ride one? Thanks.

I'm 6'3" / 190 lbs.

Please, no comments from the peanut gallery about my looking silly.  I already know it.  The pic is just for referrence purposes.

It will be tolerable.  The stock seat on my 1987 Savage made my butt hurt after about 30 minutes.  It is so much fun to ride that a little pain in the butt is worth it.  I changed the seat before too long though.

I think the seat on the newer models is different.  I haven't sat on one of those.

i'm 5'9" and feel cramped, well i did until i got some forward controls. the s40 seats are more uncomfortable, i just put one on my savage. you really need to ride the bike to make a judgement, i mean i'm the shortest one so far that answered, and i feel cramped?

RigidChop, are you sure you aren't riding it like the famous drunken cowboy?  The guy who came out of the bar, got on his horse and discovered someone had cut of its head, so he rode all the way home with his finger stuck in the windpipe to keep it from bleeding to death? :)  That would make it a little uncomfortable.

Maybe its a matter of experience.  This is my first bike in many years.  I haven't any larger ones as a frame of reference.  I wouldn't mind some highway pegs, but since changing the seat, I'm not stiff or sore when I climb off the thing.  I just love this bike.  I'm afraid I'm going to wear it out.

I'm about 5'10 and I feel cramped on it.  Still fully stock though.

 6'3'?
I'll bet no one says you look silly to your face.
Seriously, you'll probably want drag bars with straight risers, and  I have 12.5" shocks instead of the stock 10.5"'s.  This bike will fit most anyone if you work it out a bit.

Is it possible that shorter arms force you to sit forward farther and the shape of the tank or the placement of the pegs is no good in that position?  Curious...

So far it seems like a fairly clear division in this highly scientific poll of 5 participants.

6-02 and over, OK
5-10 and under, Not So Much

5'6", 145 pounds. S-40 drag bars, stock pegs & seat.  I bet someone who knows more about good bike ergonomics could show me a few things to make it fit me better. Its okay, but if someone thought they could make it better, Id listen. I have so much fun riding it, I dont mind that its kinda hard on me.

For me 4 inch forward controls made a huge difference in comfort on the bike.  I recommend them highly.  The ones I have are from forum member EdL.

i have the 4 inch ones as well from ed l. and honestly i probably couldve went an inch longer, but i'll keep them as they are. (way more comfortable than stock) also my chopper is pretty long, so that may be why i feel cramped on the savage.

Sandy and all the rest,
Thank you very much. You have answered my question. No, Sandy, you do not look silly. The bike I am buying is a 1997 - so the seat will be different. I am using the bike mainly for a second "car" for going back and forth to work but I am sure once the motorcycle bug takes over again, I will be making a few road trips with my wife. Thanks again. Many blessings to you all and happy trails.
