Title: I need info on Ignition Advance
Post by Steve M on 05/30/08 at 08:36:55

Hi all,

I have fettled many machines in my time but never had this problem with Electronic ignition before.

Engine starts and idles real sweet and nice and quiet.
Engine will rev up quickly and smoothly to I guess about 2,500 rpm.
But if you rev it and hold revs up it starts to backfire, (and you can feel it stuttering as if ignition occurs too late).

I have ensured that valve timing is correct, carb has been thoroughly checked also and all is ok.

Then I checked the ignition timing with a strobe, (while being sprayed with a mist of oil through the timing hole!!  That's a strange setup).
When the engine is revved the timing does not advance.
At 4,000 rpm the ignition should be in 30 degrees of advance but it doesn't move at all.

I have read my original Suzuki and the Clymer manuals and it doesn't mention the subject anywhere. It states that max advance is 30 degrees at 4,000 rpm and that's it, which I find very strange.

I can't see any springs anywhere to advance ignition by centrifugal force.

So does anyone know how / what component controls the ignition advance?

thanks
