Has anyone ever changed the savage wheels and used disc brakes in the rear. Just wondering.

Why? The rear is supposed to be used to assist the front, Something like 70% of the braking power comes from the front brake. The rear doesn't need to be overly powerful for the part of the slowing process it is doing.

Not very many aluminum wheels available with disk brakes in the rear.

the gs450 is drum

the gs650 has disk, but is shaft drive and not directly compatible.

I was thinking about going with a sportbike wheel or a solid aluminum blank. Whatever is easiest and best priced. I have taken off the rear fender and am planning on altering the swingarm to fit whatever I find. I have a set of harley factory controls with a rear master that I plan on using, just need a wheel and rotor. Will probably extend the swingarm and go to chain drive.

Wouldn't it be easier to get a swing arm and rear wheel with the disk brake attached and just modify the swing arm mount to fit the savage? Don't know if it would be possible but though I'd just toss it out there for everybody to think about.

some gs 750's have a disc brake rear, and have mags.

Just my 2 cents,but make sure the donor hub also has the rubber absorber pads (cush drive),without them you run the risk of breaking parts($$$$). The xs 650 yamahas had rear disc with a mag wheel,but does not use the "cush drive" that the Savage requires since its cushioning is done within the clutch assy. K.J.

Thanks for the info! I wish I would have known that yesterday :-[ I probably should have done some more homework. I decided to go with an 02' SV650 rear end. Swingarm, wheel, rotor, caliper. Now I am in the mock up phase for putting it all together. Time to crank up the MIG and go to work!
