Title: ROAD KING TANK ON!!! (now with pics)
Post by YonuhAdisi on 05/28/08 at 19:52:48

Just finished installing the Road King tank, it looks REALLY good. (except my poor excuse of a bondo job)

I'll have to get pics tomorrow if I have time. But here's the gist of it.

I had to set the tank just a bit higher than I thought, but it still has plenty of clearance for the handle bars. Used about 30 to 35 washers for spacers and a 3/8 inch X 5 inch long bolt for the front mount. The seat was a bit trickier to get on than I thought it would be but I managed it with some elbow grease to squish the seat down enough for bolt holes to line up.

But I believe I will need some longer foot pegs though with the wider tank legs are spread further apart and my feet rest on the outside edge of the pegs.

Still need to relocate speedometer, gonna try to get a GT750 tach cable tomorrow.

Of course I'd like to see pictures, but most of all I want to know if that tach cable is indeed the correct one for relocating the speedo!

I still have that 3.7 gallon GZ-250 tank laying around here. Only one more gallon than stock, but it might be worth the trouble...  :)

Oh man do I want to see pics.  I'm so sick of filling up every other day.  Which Road King model tank did you get?

I used an '08 Road King tank. You will have to get a petcock adapter and a Harley petcock as the '08 Road King is fuel injected. A fuel injected Harley tank doesn't have a petcock but a place to screw the fuel line in directly. But if you get the adapter it will work just fine. Adapter costs about 20.00 bucks and I used a manual Harley petcock because the vacuum operated one was beyond my budget. But to use a manual petcock, just plug the vac. port on the carb and remember to shut off the fuel when you shut the bike down.

man, that looks like the seat would jam you up in the family jewels!

It does a little bit, I am going to have to figure something out with the seat eventually, and as I stated above, I will need to make me some longer foot pegs. The wider tank puts my feet on the outer edge of the pegs. But all and all I personally like how the tank turned out. Except for my ugly bondo job that is.

Future tip,, for anyone who has a ding in a bike part. Bodymen ( well, USED to be, when I was doing it) are like most folks. $20.00 & a 6 pack will get a lot done. Alsao, I can give a quick few tips on bodywork, so anyone about to mix bondo, holler at me. I can make it less stressful in 5 minutes. We will talk on the phone, ty[ping is too hard when offering advice, I gotta ask questions & its a back & forth chat, not just do this, do thsi, do thsi.

I like the look of that tank on that little bike,,

It is a 6 gallon tank. Won it off of e-bay for a total of 68.00 USD which included the shipping.

But once you do fill it up, with our bikes gas milage you can go about 300 miles on a tank.

Its like money in the bank. Fill it up, & while you burn that gas, gas goes up another buck/gallon.

WHAT IS CHANCES OF USING THE SAVAGE SPEEDOMETER IN THAT CENTER HOLE ???

300 MILES PLUS A FEW, = DREAM COME TRUE

I PUT A SEAT OFF A "SOFT-TAIL" FRONT AND REAR ON MY SAVAGE, THE FRONT ONE GOT REMODLED AT THE GAS TANK END.  FELLS GOOD TO SET ON SOMETHING AS WIDE AS I AM.

GET BACK TO ME WITH THE SAVAGE SPEEDOMETER FIT ???

THANKS

With the price of the tank, (including shipping) which was 68 USD and change, the entire mode was about 150 without the peg mod and tach cable I need for the speedo relocate.

It took about two hours to fit the tank.

Savage speedo will not fit. Center hole opens directly into the tank were the fuel is.

All I did with the seat was force it down until the holes matched up, but I will need to do some kind of mod to be a bit more comfortable. Will have to get back to you on what I end up doing.

Okay, I think I answered all of ya'lls questions to the best of my ability at the moment. Like I said I am on vacation at the moment in South Carolina and the FireLizard is still in New Mexco. Will be able to get back to the mods and such when I get back there.

I'd shoot for a 4 gallon tank. 200 miles is a good range in most of the U.S.
