Post by Cory on 05/22/08 at 21:24:34

what is the best tire replacement to get for the rear that is good for all weather conditions that don't cost an arm and a leg ? and what other sizes could i use other than the stock size without making any adjustments?

Your tires are your connection with the world.  How much is your life worth?

Motorcycle Accessories Warehouse (http://www.mawonline.com/newsite/cheng_shin-tires.htm) has:
$ 37.95 Cheng Shin C906 Himax 100/90H19 Front Tire
$ 47.95 Cheng Shin C907 Himax 140/90H15 Rear Tire
(plus shipping)

"Do one thing, do it Right."  Metzeler only makes motorcycle tires.
Dennis Kirk (http://www.denniskirk.com) has a low price guarantee, f/r Metzelers for $219 delivered.

I know this is probably a dumb question ,but,I'll ask ,due to lack of knowledge :)

Can you put racing tires on a cruiser?The Savage?

Don't they have better /different traction?

Yes, they may have twice the traction, but have half the life span.

I've got too many bikes to put tires on to be spending the money on top-dollar Metzler-Avon etc... And have decided to go the cheap route with Cheng Shin all around on all of them.

The style of Cheng Shins I have chosen are all DOT speed rated and tested "H" for 130mph. I've run the heck out of their cheap tires on dirt bikes without ever having a failure, and I have reasonable confidence in their ability to hold up on the road too. I may not get maximum mileage out of them, but I have seen some of the "cheap" brand tires last 12-15k miles on the rear of light bikes like the Savage and even further on the front. Since I plan on keeping multiple bikes around, my tires are more likely to die from weather cracking (again) than tread wear issues.

Besides all that, I've got some real old-school heavy tread patterns on these tires; which I actually trust more when hitting those occasional sand and gravel patches.

I've discovered that I really dislike these modern nearly slick "sport tour" tires with only a little squiggle of tread on them. Just a tiny little patch of sand, or patch of water and they try to throw you to the ground. I liked the looks of these:

Especially at $130 a pair including new tubes and rim strips, shipping included! I'll report later how I like them once installed. I only have one Cheng Shin on the back of 99 #1 so far, and it has been serving me well for the couple hundred miles I've put on it.

Hey what's this all about?  Tires, even the very cheapest ones are costing more and more and more every time I read a post on tires.  Amazing.

Why do you guys keep changing out your tires all the time, anyway?

Well, in my case, it isn't a case of "keeping changing tires" it is a case of continuing to buy 10 and 20 year low mileage old bikes that still have the OEM tires one them!!!  Ya know they weather crack when some very old man who was the P.O. only rode the bike 6k miles in nearly 20 years! In the case of my 99s, one of then is nearly 14k on the OEM tires from IRC. The tread looks like they could go a couple more thousand miles, but I just don't trust the tiny little weather cracks in them.

My first car, a '53 Dodge, affectionally called the Galloping Warthog (half as fast and twice as ugly) ran on a set of American Eagle Tires -- bald.  I carried three spare tires, all bald.  (You could go to the junkyard and walk away with a wheel and bald tire for under a buck.)  Had lotsa flats.  Had a tire on my Bugeye go flat on the freeway, made the car handle really weird.  Eventually I learned that if you keep good rubber under the vehicle you have a LOT less problems.

When I was really young,I had a guy one time ask me if he could paint my tires black!!

I said,What? Why?

He said " So the air wont show through" ::)

(Pretty bald tires,I guess ;)
