I have bought a replacement savage engine from a breaker here in UK. They said it is from a bike brought over from the US and broken for spares.
I know it is 2002 or later as it has the black cylinder and engine block.
But I don't know what year it was made, and am curious to find out, as it may be important in the future should I need spares.

It is engine number P401 167202.

Anyone got an engine number close, (what year is yours), know where information is listed, know how to date from the engine number, or just got a good idea.

P401 is the engine model.

My '01 is 15xxxx,

so.....someone with a '86 want to see if they have a engine SN of P401 - 00xxxx ???

If so, then a '96 might have a P401-10xxxx

the '95 is a p401 131xxx the '02 is a p401 155xxx

Thanks Reelthing. That sort of blows my theory. I guess it's just a "one-up" number.

My theory was that the first two digits was the year, where 00xxxx was '86 and 87 was 01xxxx, etc etc. Using that, the '95 would have been 09xxxx and the 13xxxx would have been a '99.

My '01 is 152xxx, and it has a MFG date on the VIN tag of 12/00

So lesson learned, limited info can lead to erroneous theories. ((sorry in advance to you scienctist out there, but hey... learn!!!!))

looks like just a count around 3k per year I guess

so back to the first number P401 167202 looks to me
like around 2005 - sounds like a good find of a late model engine

THX for that chaps,
I took head cover off to check inside and the valves, springs and camshaft / journals look spanking new so I don't think it's done many miles.

This is a good bit of technical trivia that should go in the tech sect IMHO.
