Title: Newbie Question
Post by BillP on 05/19/08 at 06:41:39

Hey guys,
Just a quick question, I hope someone may be able to answer. I am relatively new to riding. I just recently purchased a 2000 savage. I thought it was a great deal. I'm still happy with it, I am just not sure if transmission work has been done on it.
I looked to find that this bike is supposed to have a 5spd transmission, though I it only seems to have 4 gears that I can get into. I have taken the bike up to about 70 mph and have noticed that it does still seem to have power left. I was wondering if it was possible that it was changed to a older 4spd transmission. I know the older savages came this way.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I felt the same way with the FireLizard (2000 Savage) I thought I had only four gears until I made it a point to count my shifts and low and behold, it is a five speed.

I guess it is possible that I missed one. Not sure. I'll have to check this afternoon on the way home from work.

Just remember, when you take off you are already in first, so you should be able to shift up four times. (I know that sounds like talking to a three year old, but I have done this a couple of times forgetting I was already in first and trying to shift up five times.)

Some Kawasaki's had neutral at bottom and all five gears where up,the 2 cycles anyway

It always feels one gear short.  (Most cruisers do.)  Don't worry, you can wind it out.  It won't hurt it.  May tickle the heck out of your hands.  Several of us switched to a chain drive that gives us a little better spread on the gears.  Look it up in the tech section if your interested.

Two things...

1) On the gear shift side of the engine for both 4 & 5 spd's there is a shift pattern in the side case.

2) on the 5 spds, the jump from 4th to 5th doesn't seem like much of a jump.

Just in case you find yourself trying to shift up into fifth when youre already there, there is sometimes a false neutral above fifth you should be wary of. If it happens, just upshift again and it should be fine.

its a short shift between 4th and 5th. I've found my false neutral between 4 and 5.
