Post by shermeco on 05/16/08 at 08:40:56

I am going home to upstate NY from Virginia Beach on 6/19 and riding my bike that far is out of the question
what is another cheep way i can get it home
maybe a rental trailer from u haul is the cheapest but i figured i would get some ideas from everyone here first

Coincidently I was just looking at a couple of websites that sell 'cradle style' trailers for motorycles. Our group was thinking about picking one up in case one of us should have an unexpected breakdown.

Both units plug into a hitch receiver on the back of a vehicle. No wiring harness required, no trailer plates, takes up very little room. I imagine you could use it once and resell it at a fair price.

Looking forward to the review.  I may get one of these if it works well.

The handy hauler is the one that I got.
It works ok, but I would perfer one that pivots.
Because the bikes leans alot in corners.  This is because of the 35° head angle and raising the front wheel up just makes it worse.

My recomendation to you is not to stop in corners.  Stop straight then turn.

Looks like a good idea -- I'd consider removing the belt or chain for a long haul.  It wouldn't be pretty if the bike popped into gear on the slab.

Only other drawback is, you're "trailering" on your back tire.  That could put some serious wear right in the middle of the tread.

And of course, if it means the difference between a vacation without your bike and a vacation with the thumper, it starts entering the no-brainer territory!

If you're thinking of a trailer rental you have or will be installing a hitch on your cage.  In such a case one of the little utility trailers from Harbor Freight is a rather handy thing to have.  Costs about the same as a single trailer rental.  Even the smallest can be made to hold a Savage.  Also handy for moving furniture to/from apartments for yourself or friends, go camping with everything including the kitchen sink, haul trash to the dump, whatever.  Almost as handy as a pickup truck and easier to load since it's not so high.

And depending on the hitch you got, the savage is light enough for the hitch carriers.

I looked up your trip on GoogleMaps and it quotes 545 miles from Norfolk (USNavy) to Gloversville...
That's along the coast and riding much too close to NYC for comfort.

There's another route, Rt95 to DC, Beltway and Rt270 to Frederick MD, Rt15 to Harrisburg PA, Rt81 up to NY State and Rt88 around the Catskills...
This route totals 620 miles or 6 tankfuls

Should make a pleasant 2 day ride.

If you cruise at a steady 60mph (boring, I know!) you should be home without any trouble.

Of course, you can pack only so much (bags) on a Savage...

:)

But Fedex ground or UPS can send a box of stuff to your destination and back home fairly reasonably!

Here are a couple of pictures of my hauler. I love it.  Well worth the money.  Ed   :)

A common dilemma -- my first solution was to use a pair of 2x8s to ramp the bike into the bed of my Chevy S10.  Drawbacks include the scariness of offloading and necessity to remove camper shell.

So last week I bought one of theose 'cradle' carriers that fit into a Class III receiver ($100, Craigslist).   This particular one has a 500 lb capacity, so the Savage is OK.  Haven't taken it on a trip yet, but will post fotos and report back.
