I'm averaging 51.5 driving two-lane highways at 65-70 mph with stop signs every 5 miles or so.  I've managed 56 mpg driving 55 mph and taking it easy on acceleration.  One day I'm going to do everything right, just to see if I can break 60mpg.  Mine is a 1987 model.  It's completely stock, except for a fork bag and a five gallon cooler strapped to the sissy bar.  No windshield.  I'm 6'-3" and 190 and wear loose flappy Carhart clothes.  I'm told all of those things are hard on mileage.

I'm averaging 56.5 on an S40 with a 34 mile a day commute that's probably 85% surface streets.

varies on smile factor  ;D.

I have gotten 54 mpg but .... last tank (first tank after replacing pilot jet) only got 41.  That could be becuase I was seeing if I had gotten rid of the backfire, .... lots of rev's then off the gas and clutch in to check for the POP.  Also found I had the screw real rich.....

First tank after engine rebuilt was 39, and it was a steady climb to 54.  Have 2.5K miles on since the rebuild......

expect about 45-55mpg. Maybe a bit less. maybe a bit more.

As a side note:  some of you know my wife just got a GZ250.  Well, it finally used enough fuel to make it worth stopping at the station.  With only about 200 miles on the odometer, the thing is getting 79 miles to the gallon, at about 50-55 mph.  I'm pretty happy about that.

I have a 2005 s-40 with 7000 miles on it . Just checked the mileage for the first time(bike is new to me ) and got 57.5 mpg. this was a mixture of around town, and cruising the country roads mostly 40-50 mph. or less.Sammy.

I got 47 last time I checked on my 2003, which has had the half spacer mod and a mixture adjustment.  That was mixed freeway and city riding with some hard acceleration.

I live out in the boonies but still have to contend with stop signs, and I have a tendancy to beat every one at the above mentioned, but I'm still in the ball park with 47 mpg,
Harley Muffler and a jet change,no white washer.

100 miles to a tank every time.

On my first full tank on a new 08/S40 it ran 72 mpg.  That's a Canadian Imperial Gallon (4.546 liters).  Mixed riding but mostly cruising secondary roads up to 90 kph (55mph) at 60 to 70 degrees F.  Fuel, 10% ethanol enhanced 89 octane Sunoco.  I weigh in at 170  lbs.  Following Suzi's breaking-in guidelines. So that's 25 km per liter or 15 miles per liter.

61- 65 mpg secondary roads 1 number richer on high speed jet and slow speed jet, low speed mixture set ,stock muffler with 5/8 drilled hole up the hole in end in to the plate ,100% gasoline,50-65 mph, 165# full size windshield.

I have noticed that when you think you filled it to the top, it will take quite a bit more if you wait a few seconds to let the gas go down. Since our tank is so small even 2/10 of a gallon more makes a sizable difference if you measure gas mileage. If you keep track and record it over, let's say 5 fillups or more, you get a much more accurate number since it will average out. This might explain the wide range of reported mileage and off course there are a lot of other factors like weight, state of tune, cruising speed, riding style etc.  Me, I seem to average 45-48 with a fairly aggressive riding style. But I'm willing to pay for this extra fun ;D

Remember that there are some factors that affect milage that vary between riders.  This being rider weight, windshield or not, summer vs winter fuel, hilly or flat terrain, etc.   This being said, I live in a flat area, I weigh about 140 lbs, have no windshield,  and drive a combination of surface and freeway (85% surface, 15% freeway.)  I get 56 mpg consistantly.  When I took thumper on a long slow ride (40 mph) I got up to 67 mpg, but this was unusual.  I also have a Virago 250 and get 75-76 mpg regularly.  (... but I deliver more smiles per gallon on the thumper!!!  ... this bike just steals my heart!)

I get about 40+ mpg, but I am in stop and go city traffic and do short run errands, with saddlebags, a big windscreen, and usually loaded with work stuff or heavy groceries in the bags.

This reminds me of a question I've been meaning to ask...

I've seen mention here of windshields affecting performance.  My dealer said that a screen on Kay's GZ250 might slow her down.  Doesn't the windshield deflect air that would just hang up on the rider's jacket, helmet, etc. anyway?  Surely  that air is going to drag on the bike somewhere as it goes past?  So without factoring comfort into it, what are the positives and negatives of using a windshield?

40 to 50 MPG dependably, but mine is carrying a sidecar.

Now we're talking some of my language about aerodynamic drag.

Think of the flat plate surface you're presenting to the oncoming airflow - the actual number of vertically oriented square inches.

The reason any streamlining works to reduce drag is that it reduces this flat plate area.  Theoretically, a pie pan of 100 sq. " presents no more drag than a streamlined device of the same flate plate area.

But since streamlining allows far more surface area to present a lesser flat plate area, you get a benefit.

Windshields do that - reduce the flat plate area.

Clear as mud?

Yes a windshield slows you down some, not a whole lot,With a windshield you don't' get blown off the bike at speed above 50mph so you don't have to hold on so hard. 36 years of motorcycling.

Title: Re: Gas mileage
Post by Sandy Koocanusa on 06/02/08 at 13:13:52

Well, Kay is a "perfect 36. twelve, twelve, twelve," as they say.  So maybe she does present less surface area than a windshield.  But for anyone else, take off the shield and the air will collide with the rider, right?  So there shouldn't be too much additional drag with the windshield?

I probably better stop trying to understand this for today.  Just came out of surgery and me thinks the pills I'm taking may be clogging up the old brain pan.

All of my Savage riding is urban.  I ride in all types of weather (I don't own a cage).

Over the last 12 months, my Savage has averaged 57.7 smpg.

The gas mileage is higher in the summer and lower in the winter.

On a bad day, I would get 98 miles to a tank. (before having to hit my reserve)  The best I ever got was 141miles. It all depends on how and where you ride.

I've only filled my tank twice so far on my '96 with a windshield and my fat 215lb butt on it. Both times I've gone over 100 miles, mainly highway driving but a lot of me having fun and getting to know the bike. I haven't hit the reserve yet... All smiles so far!

hi, sorry for the OT question, but could you elaborate on differences between virago 250 and s40 (particularly in the 'smile' department). I'm looking for the bike for my wife and would like to know how more tame s40 is.

thks,

K
