I read whatever threads I could find on the Harley Sportster seat swap. I went to eBay and bought a seat from a 2005 Sportster (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=020&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&viewitem=&item=300219741040&rd=1) but it won't fit and appears to need some of the bottom cut out to follow the lines of the frame.

What did I do wrong?

Nothing.

The seat is NOT a direct swap. It will require some fabricating to make it fit the Savage. You either need to come up with a support that will hold it up off of the frame, or you need to shave the seat.

You're about to find out that nothing we do to customize the Savage is 'plug and play'.

It's the right seat, so it must be your perception. It fits like oj's glove after a fight. You have to work at it to get it on.

haha, ok thanks guys. I knew that it was not a direct swap but I thought it would go on easier than it looks like it's going to be. I do a good amount of fab work on my car so I know what i'm going to have to do now.

When I am looking at the pictures in the install writeup there is a hole for the back of the seat to attach to. On my 86 there is a bar. How are people getting it to fit?

My '96 has the same bar, I used one of the brackets and just hook it for the rear attachment. I think others have either cut it off or bent it down. But I don't think it would interfere if you left it. I was going to slot the seat pan and hook it that way but it doesn't fit that tightly.

I had to cut out some of the bottom material on my sportster seat. After that, it sat down pretty tightly on the frame. As for the rear mount. My bike is a 2005 and the rear bracket lined up nicely with the hole that the brakelight wires go through. I also relocated the brakelight.

I was wondering could you take the sportster seat off the base and put it on a s40 base or is it way to long.The 455003 seat at dennis kirk is 27 1/4 long

Mine hooks on the rear and rests on the front then speed pinned on both sides.

Ok, I think i've seen your pics. You had to attach a custom bracket on the bottom that lined up with the original holes right?

Sportster seat will almost fit perfectly to 07 S40 in length.
There is rear tab that screw goes through and I had to move that one
more inside. Screw is now almost covered with the fabric of the seat.
It also comes bit more under sissy bar then original seat but it is fine.
In the middle it will be bit high but simple metal bracket worked for me.

How long is a regular sportster seat?And i guess the s40 seat has
more of a dip in it
