Title: charging voltage below 14 volts
Post by Steve M on 05/13/08 at 06:20:29

I fitted a 5 wire regulator to my 88 savage.
It has run fine with it fitted, and the battery maintains a healthy charge.
When I was going to by a maintenance free "gel" battery I noticed an advisory message to ensure there is a charge current of at least 14 volts or the gel battery may go flat.

My system is charging at about 13 volts with the lights on, 13.7 lights off.
I have done the volt checks on yellow wires from alternator and all are correct at over 100 volts unregulated at 5000 rpm.

Any owners checked their charge voltage and what do you get?

It maybe that your installed battery is old and causing what seems to be a lower charging voltage. I've switched the highly recommended Big Crank and it seems to be working fine. Max

THX for that Max.
Battery seem to be OK but I don't know how old it is, (could be very old for all I know!). So I reckon I'll get a new one and see what volts I get then.

I'm an electrical idiot, and am in fact about to post a question on the board along the lines of your, but don't want to hijack your thread.  Anyway, I stuck the tester on the battery posts at high idle, and read 14.74 volts.  If that's the right way to check it, then there is a comparison for you.  That's on a fairly new battery.

THX Sandy
a bit over 14 volts is normal I reckon.
I was just wondering if it's common to get less from a savage genny.
