Title: mod my 1st bike (new question added)
Post by ying_hk on 05/09/08 at 09:29:52

Hello, everyone.
I am new and my LS650 is my 1st bike. I like its old school looking.

I got this bike's picture as my reference.
I wanna start the MOD from the handle bar 1st.
and then the muffle.

for the HANDLE-BAR in the picture, any web-shop selling that?
in-case, I live in a small country in Asia, HONG KONG.
LS650 is rare in this place, I am hard to get its part.
So I think get them online is the best and only way.

and how about the muffle?
if i wanna change it, anything I should pay attention?
I want to have a LOUD and DEEP sounding muffle. and better got a fair performance too.

Thanks so much for the attention.
Please kindly suggest. I am really new in bike.
Thanks.

Cool bike.

The muffler in the pic looks like an HD turnout pipe.  You can find them on ebay, but not sure about your shipping.  I have one that I took off mine that is definitely loud and increased performance.  But it's blued pretty bad.  You are welcome to it if you pay for the shipping.

Those sure are interesting handlebars.  Not sure where to find those.  You may find standard 1" ape hangers will get you the look and be more readily available.  Many online stores will have those.

Looks like they changed the rims and forks out as well.  Front brake is one the wrong side and the rear is a disk.

EDIT: DUUUHHHH.... I just noticed the other pipe.  It's not a savage  ;D

Welcome Ying!

I like the old-skool looking bikes as well.  You should be able to find a muffler to fit your header pipe.  Anything in the 45 mm range should fit with very few issues.  Any handlebar that is 25-26 mm diameter should fit your risers.  The rear fender on the bike you posted looks like a boat trailer fender.  You can find them at trailer-parts stores, hardware stores, or online for very reasonable prices.  Once you get one, you just mod to fit and look like you want.  The seat on that bike looks to be a solo seat, those can be found at most after market bike parts stores and online as well.

Of course, I am basing the availability on what  is near me, your mileage may vary.

and anyone got the idea to paint the engine/first muffle in satin black?
I think it is pretty cool.

Do i need any special oil/spray for that job?

They make a 1200 degree header paint that would be the best product for the application.  Most other paints would not be able to handle the high temps of the header pipe.  The motor should be fine with most rattle can paint and good prep before painting.  Plus, the rattle can makes it easy to touch up.

Actually, I am live in aparment, so I guess my PIPE+engine cant sound too HUGE.....It is bad.

and for the HD turnout pipe, is it straight OUT?
I mean there is nth inside the pipe and just let the THING out straightly? seems if it let my engine sound 100% in volume, you guys will not see me anymore soon. I will live behind the gate or be killed. :(

Thanks everyone.

That is the muffler that I installed!  It is EASY!  Trust me, I'm  no mechanic.  If I can do it, you can do it.  All you'll need is a pipe fitting that is 1 5/8 internal diameter ($2.50 USD at any auto parts store).  They include a fitting with the muffler, but it is too thick for our head pipe.  The 1 5/8 fitting is perfect.  8-)

The sound is awesome!  It's louder and deeper, but not so much to aggravate your neighbors.  I live in a very quiet neighborhood with lots of older people.  They don't have the slightest complaint ... as a matter of fact some have even commented how nice my bike is.  The only time it gets really loud is when you lay on the throttle.  Just ease out of the area and then when you're clear ... let 'er rip!  :o

No, the solo seat will come with it's own pan that the upholstery will be attached to.  If you decide to go with a solo seat, you will have to fab up a bracket of some sort to hold the hinge at the front of the seat, and the springs that cushion the rear of the seat.  I would recommend something that bolts or welds on, I don't think that solder will hold.
