Title: fork bags
Post by SavageGreaseMonkey13 on 05/07/08 at 17:31:22

I was wondering if anyone knows of a place to get fork bags. Are there certain ones made for the Savage or is it one size fits most kind of thing? I dont want anything fancy just a plain black leather one. Thanks for any help.

I saw one in the 4 foot by 4 foot motorcycle section at the local Walmart.  I don't know anything about them either, so I can't tell you if it was a good one.  But that's a place to start, anyway.

It was black and it was leather.  I think it was priced around $25.

Bell is the name on the Walmart product... I think someone else had one of these but I don't remember the particulars... $25-ish is about right for the price. I have a Willie/Max bag that matches the white of my bike... it is a little larger than I would like but looks pretty nice. It is attached via Velcro straps.

Got one of the Wally-world Bell bags. I think it was $26 +sales tax.   I use it to carry bungie cords, a mesh & vinyl bag (for store stops) and some other small things.

For size estimate, it will hold four 12 oz Soda-pop / beer cans.

On several occasions I oops's and forgot to strap it shut.  It is stiff enough that the flap stayed closed.

Only issue is that I had to put some black duct tape on the fender (my bike is black) because it was touching down on the paint and leaving marrs. I guess from fast stops.

There are all kinds available on ebay.  That's where I got mine, good price too.

Ditto for Ebay, I bought a good quality used leather bag for $10. Also, if you're looking for rear bags, check out the T-Bags close-outs here: http://www.tbags.com/closeoutsall.aspx. I bought the 8x8 Glove bag for short hops, and the TB700RKR 11x8 roll bag. Have a couple of bigger bags as well. The pocket for the sissy bar/backrest on the roll bag is kind of big, but works fine with a bungee. For $15 a piece, not a bad buy at all. They're very well made.

I have a Wallyworld Bell bag and it fits under the headlamps.  I have my small tool kit, flex ties, and a couple bungee cords.  It's been there for a little over a year with no concerns.

It's a River Road fork bag -- leather, just under 30 bucks.  I mounted it on the risers so it doesn't interfere with anything and it hides some of the cables.  Holds about what you'd expect from something it's size.

Has anyone found the need to lock their fork bag? If so, how did you do it. I had someone go through a bag (on the sissy bar) and knew what to take and left the other stuff. I don't want to lose any more tools!

Luggage locks, one at each end, drill eyelet thru flap, front and side.

I think one fellow here used one of those skinny trailer locks for the saddle bag.

But really, a knife is a key for any soft bag.

That's where a magnetic tank bag is good -- if the low-life is watching, he knows you're taking the good stuff with you!

Thanks for the ideas... I agree that a knife will unlock the bag! Is there a magnetic tank bag that you would recommend? I worry about scratching the tank but maybe that is not an issue with the newer bags.

Some Wal-Marts have cycle and atv gear, but a lot don't. You have to pick the right one.

I got the Bell one from Wally World.  I don't use it much, but it works fine.  Good grip, doesn't scratch the paint.  Yes, it covers the speedo.
Thought I had pictures posted here somewhere...  can't find 'em now.  :-?

Just check Wally World online and they don't list any bags for motorcycle ... at least that I can find.  I do remember a display (a VERY small one) near the automotive section where I saw some Bell helmets.  Didn't pay much attention though.  Will have to run back up there and check out the bags.

Correct on all counts.  Wally World on line does not show their MC, ATV, stuff.
IF they have Mobil 1 VTwin, it will be in that (miniscule) section along with the bags, helmets, gloves, etc.
I suggest calling all the Wally Worlds in your area and asking for Automotive, then ask them if they have that section.  (The front desk won't have a clue).

The thing with magnetic (and all) tank bags is that you have to keep the tank clean to avoid scratches.

As for me, I have two -- first is a small Marsee Bullet Bag.  It'll hold a digital camera and my sunglass case.  It does have a plastic "window" for a note card or directions.

And a basic cargo from Cycle Gear:

No map window, but it holds quite a bit more -- especially with the expansion gusset unzipped.

And neither one covers up the speedometer!
