Title: Oil Leak! Help!
Post by shermeco on 05/04/08 at 10:51:05

To Start i ordered my manual from amazon the other night so i can maybe figure out how to fix this problem.
I just don't know where it is leaking from.
So the other day i added some stop leak from STP and it leaked more
it is leaking around the bottom half of the engine it looks like around the head gasket but then i looked at the bolt i think its a bolt inside next to the exhaust. I  am so confused where it is coming from so my questions are.
Is it all right to keep driving until i get my manual?
(the oil keeps dripping on to my pants or if i wear shorts it burns me ouch)
Should i just try to repair the plug/cap and see if that stops the leak?
In the manual dose it ex plane where to put the gasket sealer thats needs to be put on to seal the engine back up?
Why has the oil leak stopped randomly as well as leek on diffrent sides of the bike at different times i ride it?
also so you know it only leaks when on the stand sometimes when it decides to leak on the carb side?
i know this a lot to ask but thank you if you can answer any of the questions!

You say the oil is coming from a bolt to the left of the exhaust.  Right above that bolt is where the infamous leaking head plug is.  The SSM and clymers don't say to apply sealant on this plug when installing, so that's why when the dealer does the work it leaks.  We know better, either ask for it to be sealed or do it yourself.
There's a passageway between the head and the cam so oil can travel all over especially when pushed by the wind.
It's alright to keep riding, just watch the oil level and keep full.

Very good step by step.  The only thing you need to do this is the head plug and hi temp sealant.
The head plug is #12 in the cylinder head page

I swapped out my plug for the new version and I put some sealant on there but i'm still leaking oil.  Where else could it come from in that general area?

One possibility....there are some bolts that should have o-rings on them since they go thru oil passages.

Another, the sealer that is suppose to be applied between head and head cover may have been brushed accidentally off when putting the cover back on.

I think you will need to buy a can of spray engine degreaser,  clean the engine.  Go for a short ride.  Then get a bright small flashlight and hunt down the leak.
