Title: Which Dyna muffler do I need?
Post by rkdygert on 04/28/08 at 05:02:18

I've been reading and watching this site for about the past year now (bought my Savage last May) and I want to finally upgrade my exhaust.  After doing alot of reading, I think I want to go with one off a Dyna but I'm still not sure exactly which one I need for easiest installation.

I'm looking at a pair off of a Dyna Super Glide on ebay right now...do i need to consider anything else or would any Dyna muffler work?

Thanks,
-Ryan

Rail mount ones are said to mount up a little easier.  Mine is a tab mount and it wasn't too hard.  Just don't buy one with a crossover tube and you'll do o.k.

Hey guys, and all this is a strait bolt on replacement?  Just the muffler part?  And are we talking a stock Dyna or aftermarket?  I'm real interested and would really appreciate the help.

I'm looking for a real easy slip on.  I lost much of the use of my hands and fingers and now have trouble with simple hand tools, I used to be quite the wrench turner too.  The Supertrapp looks easy, but pricey.

Thanks again,

Geoff

mounting the stock dyna is fairly straight forward, but the muffler requires some effort at the header.  The diameter of the muffler is 1/8" to 1/4" bigger than the header.  I cut about 8 slots in the muffler inlet and let the  clamp squeeze it down.  Some other members have used slices of tin cans to fill the space.  Another option is an adapter made at a muffler shop(look in the tech section for details).  Anyway if you can handle that, the mounting to the bracket is easy.  Good luck.

The Dyna is almost a bolt up.  The issue is the muffler to pipe joint.

For the header pipe to muffler connection, I used a thin piece of aluminum sheet metal that I cut to width and rolled as needed to make a tight fit.   I coated it with the tan colored muffler patch stuff you can buy at Auto-Zone (in a squeeze tube) na d let dry overnight.  Seems to be sealed so far.

The Stock clamp may need chaning too.

Some people like to angle both the Sportster and Dyna mufflers to try and get the exhaust aimed away from the brake arm/cable.  I have a Dyna turn-out which elimiates that.  But.... it's loud....
