Title: After-market Spark Plug Post by rpgpgmr on 04/26/08 at 11:39:23 The SSM says that the ONLY spark plugs we should use (for the '05 models) are either the NGK DPR8EA-9 or the DENSO X24EPR-U9. Is there a better plug out there that you all swear by or is there very little difference between manufacturers? |
Title: Re: After-market Spark Plug Post by Reelthing on 04/26/08 at 11:53:41 Here's a list of some various type http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?board=tech;action=display;num=1107534689 I have the NGK IR's in both - can't really tell if they work better or not When messing around with the carb I have a few clean Champions to judge a little on the mixture |
Title: Re: After-market Spark Plug Post by rpgpgmr on 04/26/08 at 14:02:00 Okay been reading up on the IR's and I think that's what I'm going with. Found a chart posted by kls650sm2002 a couple of years ago and that pretty much sold it for me. Would the gap be the same (.8 - .9mm) on the iridium plug? |
Title: Re: After-market Spark Plug Post by rpgpgmr on 04/26/08 at 20:21:37 Gonna try to pick up a DPR8EIX-9 at AutoZone or Advance Auto Parts. If I remember correctly, they carry NGKs. Got a feeling the dealership is gonna charge me out the $#@ if I buy them there. |
Title: Re: After-market Spark Plug Post by Reelthing on 04/26/08 at 20:23:14 If it's the NGK IR plug it tells you not to try to gap it - the center is tiny compared to a standard plug - just pop it in and forget you even have a sparkplug for the next - well don't know how long - has >10k miles on it and still looks new. |
Title: Re: After-market Spark Plug Post by rpgpgmr on 04/27/08 at 08:35:56 Yea, that's the one I'm going to get. Just did a check on Advance Auto Parts adn Autozone and neither have it ... but that doesn't necessarily mean they don't actually. Gonna check them both this afternoon. |
Title: Re: After-market Spark Plug Post by rpgpgmr on 04/28/08 at 05:33:15 Update: I had a lot of trouble finding the NGK Iridium spark plug around town. The only place I'm aware of (at least in our Tri-State Area) that sells it is Advance Auto Parts for $6.98. They had to order it, but it only took a day. I found it cheaper online, but when you factor in S&H you don't really save. |
Title: Re: After-market Spark Plug Post by klx650sm2002 on 04/30/08 at 03:47:43 I've used iridium for a long time in KLX, you could probably go to a 1.0mm gap in the Savage. Clive W :) |
Title: Re: After-market Spark Plug Post by rpgpgmr on 04/30/08 at 04:23:26 Yea I was wondering about the gap. It's VERY small. Reelthing doesn't gap his and I'm leaning that way too, although it feels wrong not to gap it .... probably psychological. |
Title: Re: After-market Spark Plug Post by toddlamp8 on 06/20/08 at 13:51:12 I have been running really, even with a pod filter and MAC exhaust, and i'm starting to think it's my plug. I will pull it today to see what it looks like but would changing the gap help? I am on a stock 86 carb with stock (rich; for stock) jets. I thought that the open filter and free flowing exhaust would help but so far it hasn't done much. |
Title: Re: After-market Spark Plug Post by verslagen1 on 06/20/08 at 14:55:59 Of what I recall (ok not much) the ir plugs are already gapped and changing it could cause the tip to break off. |
Title: Re: After-market Spark Plug Post by Oldfeller on 06/20/08 at 20:14:50 Like most specific parts, the NKG iridium plug is available through Advance Auto parts if you go to the counter and give them the exact part number -- they can get it from their warehouse in one day. Advance Auto has the best price on iridium plugs I have found anywhere less than $7 delivered to the store in one day. Bosch has very interesting looking plugs that cost more and likely do not work any better than the iridium NKGs. For a cheaper double platinum plug try calling Advance Auto and getting them to cross-reference the plug you need to a Autolite platinum plug (double platinum if they have it) -- then go buy the plug from Wal-Mart as they stock the Autolite brand for less $$. Cheap, yes -- 'ol Jedi Master Yoda would approve. |
Title: Re: After-market Spark Plug Post by mick on 06/21/08 at 00:19:52 I use the ir plug from NKG < I put mine in 18 months ago ,didn't gap it,never had a problem. |
Title: Re: After-market Spark Plug Post by rpgpgmr on 06/21/08 at 05:36:17 I however did have a problem. I dropped in the DPR8EIX-9 which is on the list posted on here of compatible spark plugs. It wasn't compatible with mine. I was down for a couple of weeks trying to figure out what was wrong. I did some carb work at the same time so naturally I figured that was what it was. When I was satisfied that the carb was fine I finally checked the spark plug and it was fried! Looked like I'd thrown it in the fireplace for a while. Went down to Advance, bought the stock plug, and she's run fine ever since. Maybe it's my altitude or maybe it's just my bike, but the DPR8EIX-9 doesn't work in mine. |
