Oneida suzuki has them on sale so I'll probably get one from them - so far they are the cheapest. I won't need it until June but I figure I'll go ahead and get it while I still have the money.

I left the Dowco bag on after my trip because it was easier to throw my change of clothes for work in there rather than the saddle bags. It never has more than a couple of pounds on it. I'll have to look at it again since it seems like more of a solid piece. Which part of yours actually failed?

Little, Check on the inside of the rack where you see the red dot: http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee201/Digger109/LuggageRackWeldE.jpg The welds on both sides of mine have broken.  I have a JC Whitney trunk loaded on the luggage rack.  I've been known to carry two gallons of milk in the trunk over bumpy roads. I got both sides rewelded, but one of the welds broke again.    So, I've currently got that side of the rack held together with a couple of u-bolts. I wish there was a stronger luggage rack available for this bike.

I've been threatening to use my GI Bill to attend a good welding school.

It is so short and the support is so limited, when you put a large torque load on the end, such as with a trunk (even an empty one) that it will crack along the welds sooner or later. You really need to put a second support between the trunk and the rear fender to absorb some of that torque load.  If not, it's going to crack every time.

Started getting the wobble on a tight off ramp one day with 15 Lb.s of photo gear in the dowco overnighter. Switching to putting the dowco on the pillion to even the weight out. Yes, the rack is small, but does come in quite handy.

Agree.  Luckily, the welded area is configured such that you can hold the pieces together with 2 u-bolts.  Doesn't look the greatest, but it is strong.
