Title: Stock muffler the quietest??
Post by shadowman on 04/16/08 at 12:49:36

I listened to the samples -- should I assume that a stock muffler on a '98 is as mellow as it gets??  I just bought this bike and it has a Supertrapp on it.  My neighbors have enough to complain about already and I am getting some hard stares.

This could be an opportunity for someone with a stock muffler in good condition.

Can't the Supertrap be made quiet by removing disks?

Yes, take all the disks out and it gets real quiet.  It don't go, but it'll be quiet.

The whole end comes out and can be packed with fiberglass.
BTW: keep the disks.

Thanks for the advice -- I'll open it up and see what there is in there for discs.  Willing to sacrifice a couple HP for peace in the cluster.

Count the disks, let us know what ya got. If you have 14, thats stock + a 6 pack. If you have 8, thats so restricted it doesnt lean it out more than stock jets. 8 disks sounds better than the stock muffler, tho. I am running 14, but my neighbors are a good ways off & dont whine about details anyway. The trapp weighs a lot less than the stock anchor. sounds better, looks better & therefore, IS better.

Disks are the layers of metal on the back end.
When you add more disks you reduce the back pressure because there are more gaps inbetween.  And you get more sound.

I opened it up and there were three discs (all together now: what a weenie!!).  I took them out and will run it later today.

Q: how would one pack it with fiberglass and, is it worth the effort?  I think I am going to have to consider a stock muffler (eventually) but have other issues for now -- bike has original tires (10 y.o.) and I am waiting for UPS to deliver a new set of Pirellis.

Did you start it when you had the cap off the 'trap - it'll talk to then for sure

by the way be sure and use anti seeeeeze grease on those bolts

if that's a clean 'trap I'll swap with you - let me check the attic and see what kind of shape the '02's muffer is in - new looking I think

hang on a second there - so you now have no disks as in 0 - but you do have the standard end cap without a hole in it?

at least you have one - with none i'd think it would seal the pipe completely - I think the recomend by 'trap minimum is 4 i'll look it up

yep their guide says 4 is equal to a stock pipe -

I guess I'll put them back in.  (audible groan)  Still loud.  What about the packing option??  Would that go around the baffle that runs down the middle?

Don't know - sort of unnatural to plug up a supertrap

I got mine used, I have the directions somewhere.  But they have a web site for support

http://forums.supertrapp.com/

If I remember correctly, you wrap the fiberglass sheet around the perforated tube.  Not really sure.
