Title: Screamin Eagle
Post by Latimer on 04/14/08 at 08:11:41

I'm thinking of putting a screamin eagle muff on my bike but im a little worried about the volume.  I listened to the sound files posted in another thread here, and it sounds great, but how loud is it?  I dont want to shake houses when I drive by.... nothing wrong with that, I just dont think I have the attitude for it.

Anyone know if this thing is super loud?

not many louder than some models of SE pipes - nothing in some but a washer to act as a baffle

sounds good.  Screamin Eagle here I come.

I have a SE Turnout pipe, but am replacing with a Dyna stock muffler.  The SE has a good sound, loud but not obnoxious.  And it gives a good performance boost.  But it starts to grate on you on a long trip and I want something a little less loud, so I found a Dyna muff on ebay for $1.

Remember that Screaming Eagale is a HD brand name and that there are multiple models.

I know the Dyna's are bolt up, Sportsters work but you need to watch which model.  On some there is a balancer (is that what it's called?) pipe inlet/outlet to link the two exhausts together.

1 3/4"  works.....  Good luck...

I think Im gonna go with this muffler... guy seems to say in the ad that its a pretty straight forward install, but i've heard that before...

it looks similar to a screaming eagle turnout I put on, the way the brace tab is on.  I had to cut about 2 " out of the muffler brace.  Other than that, it was easy.

did you have to buy a HD clamp for that SE turnout?  Or can you use the stock savage one?

Looks almost exactly what i put on mine and if it has a removable baffle you will be pleased either way it sounds 100% better than stock .

Latimer,
$75 may be a bit high, but the Screaming eagle is a desirable model for the Harley guys.

That looks like a Sportster muffler.  You may want to search eBay for "dyna muffler"

Click --> Dyna Muffler (http://search.ebay.com/ws/search/SaleSearch?from=R9&fstype=1&satitle=Dyna+muffler&_trksid=m194&from=R9&ssPageName=STRK:MEFSRCH:SRCH)

Also, see my post on my loud conversion to see how the Dyna just bolts on:

ahh too late.  I just "won" the auction by offering him $50.  I guess thats better than $75

I think I bought mine from the same guy, D-Z Custom.  (He has a lot of savage stuff...is he one of us?)  Anyway, the product was good and it wasn't too hard to mount.  HOWEVER, mine blued something bad right away.  You need to make sure you take your time mounting it.  Make sure have it on tight with no leaks, and that you have cleaned off your greasy finger prints BEFORE you ever start your engine with it on.

and rejet/white spacer/mixture adjust the carb

will do, gonna take my time.  i didnt buy his HD muffler mount though.  Wonder if thats going to be a big deal.

I actually have already rejetted (150, 50), done the spacer mod, and have my mixture screw drilled out.  So I dont have to worry about that.

I used a generic clamp I got at the auto parts store to mount it.  Cheap.  Wrapped around the stock mount and bolted through the muffler.

Glad to hear something is cheap.  This modding hobby has started to get expensive in the last few weeks.

I put a stock sporty on my Savage and love it.  I have no equipment to work on it and got it on ebay where they said i could just bend the bracket to fit it, it worked OK but i put my bike in for a tuneup/carb cleaning and he custom build a bracket for the pipe.  I did no jet changes but had the guy check the compression etc... and all are fine though there is some backfiring thats just pressure buildup in the exhaust pipe and i personally like it.  You will love the sound of a new pipe on the bike, makes a huge difference from stock.

:-? pressure build up  :-?
You got a potato in your pipe?

Give you pilot jet a 1/4 turn to the left and stop eating beans.

The clamp was for the bracket that held it in place, not to attach it to the pipe.  I used the stock clamp for the pipe and used muffler wrap to tighten the seal.  BUT..it still leaked.

I have a  screamin eagle on my bike. Its very loud. ive had the pipe off and its not much louder with no muffler at all, just more backfiring. Overall i love it. I love loud bikes, but this is probably the most "extreme" muffler you can get, a "cherry bomb" might be moreso, donno, but just keep that in mind. Its wicked loud and mean.

Just wondering - have you looked inside your SE - had one here that near the inlet was a welded in washer about 1" in diam with about say a 5/8" hole in the middle - that was all the baffle there was - not sure it would do much except stop a test stick LEOs cram up your pipe (that doesn't sound good) to check for baffles in some places
