I used the spacer mod and got the #4 white spacer from ACE hardware. I think it was 19 cents.   The cheapest and best mod ever!   after the mod, open exhaust and cone intake filter the bike runs great. Keep in mind that tuning the carb is a step by step process. After the spacer mod and tuning it has better throttle response and runs much better. I also have been able to get rid of the awful backfire. Keep tinkering with it and let us know of your progress!! Good luck

well i succeeded with the white spacer mod i took it out and put 2 small washers in place and man one heck of a difference starts up easier , quick throttle response and man will she fly i love it the only thing now is i don't know if i still should rejet or just leave her alone cause she runs 100 times better .

after reading you other post - sounds like you have a very open pipe - yes you need to rejet at least the mainjet - any back fires? - a 150 or 152.5 would be a good place to start

no backfires or anything just a nice solid deep loud sound relaxing to me but very disturbing to the neighborhood

Does anybody know how the spacer mod and idle mixture screw adjustment affects gas mileage?  I did a search and didn't find anything specific.  I am NOT rejetting or changing the muffler, and I'm curious how those mods affect fuel economy.

For a bit over 10k miles of commute the day in day out mpg on the '95 is 54mpg - 1/2 spacer, stock airfilter, 152.5 mainjet, Jardine muffler - of course it's a good bit of traffic - nothing much over 50mph

:) I've been wondering what I would do if I had a deer problem(lots of deer here).

Is there a way to make the Savage backfire on purpose???
I hope so,I need something thought out in advance should I have the deer problem...can't find anything else that would work!!

Hi everyone, I have a few questions about the white spacer mod.
Hopefully one or two of you can help me out.
So I have a 86 savage with a stock exhaust and kn filter in the original airbox, I also live in Victoria bc, ( next to ocean) so very low altitude. So It was running crappy an back firing even after I tuned it to the best I could.
So I did the white spacer mod. I took the white spacer out and put in two smaller spacers I found, there somewhere i between 1/2 and 1/3 smaller. But now the bike is dieing when I push the choke in or after I release the throttle.
So question one, do I need to change the jet if I do the spacer mod?

Question two, does it sound like I need more air ?

Question three, how does altitude change the need for different jets?

Hi: I'm in Surrey, have had my '08 for over 8 years.
If you have been inside your carb already, you should go back in and re-jet to 52.5/152.5 for sea level.
Also, re-set your idle to a fast tickover, so it won't stall during a panic stop.
Plenty of good carb tuning advice on this site. I'll be in Vic Nov 26, maybe get together.
Cheers!  8-)
ps: I may have a few spare jets. Need to check at the shop.

Ok that’s awesome advice, I will get that done :)
And forsure I’m up for it

Now an '86 carb is a different beast than a '08, jetted completely differently.
However, Canadian bikes are different from 'merican bikes too.
Sooo, take this with a grain of salt.

'86 was before EPA regulations mandating lean carburation and other BS.
Hence they are a little richer than '08.  the main jet is 155 vs. 145 and the pilot is 47.5 vs 52.5, see the carb specs in the tech section for a complete listing.  And I believe your needle has grooves instead of just a spacer, at least some did.

So you're backfiring, I'd check for an exhaust leak with a candle.

Versy, you got me!, speakin' only for my '08!

Oh well that is really good to know. Maybe I’ll just put the white spacer back in there for now. Thanks for jumping into before I went and did anything else.
