Title: Bars and Risers
Post by Latimer on 04/11/08 at 13:38:01

Well I've finally finished all the carb work on my bike (what an absolute adventure...... thanks everyone for the help btw) and it runs fantastic now, no backfire, no more leaks, never misses, love it.

So now I'm turning my attention to some cosmetic stuff.  I think I want to drop the front fender and get some drag bars.

Will any sort of drag bars (JC Whitney) work on the savage when coupled with risers?  I'm thinking 4" risers and some cheap drag bars should do the trick.  Or do I have to be careful about what type I get?

Nope, just 1" diameter. 26" is the width of stock drags.

thanks man, gonna probably go with the 4" and drags with a slight pull back.

Demin, that is the exact look that I want to go for.  You mind telling me the specs on those bars and risers and where you got em from?

I hated the way my stock buckhorns looked when I got my bike. But there really comfortable and I would'nt dream of changing them.

All factory parts.Bars are 26" wide.Risers are 4".

I have a '99 and I picked up a set of risers and drag bars off of a newer S40 on eBay.  The only issue I had was the angle of the banjo bolt on the MC.  Everything else fit right up.  The banjo bolt issue was pretty easy to deal with, I merely loosened it, changed the angle to where it was not trapping the brake line between the tank and triple tree, tightened it back up, and bled the brakes.

That's my '86 mostly stock.

For a while there was a choice of bars from Suzuki,  then buckhorns then switch to drag bars.   I have Buckhorns on my '01.  I do want to sit on a Drag bar bike to see how they feel.

Do we have a list of years somewhere here????

Might be easiest to get old stock drag bars.  eBay or maybe a WTB ad in the Marketplace here.

I'm thinking about taking the apes off of my '87,and putting drags on with low risers.I like the apes but the wind here in Texas makes them a b1tch.You're like a big parachute in the wind.
Just found my Crazy z's that I had for the Harley.Hmmmm.

My '03 Savage had the stock buckhorn bars ... a pals '05 S40 had the stock drag bar with pull-back riser combo ... I rode both Bikes and did find a noticeable difference. Found steering and cornering MUCH better with the S40's set up compared to my Savage. After Riding the S40, I decided to loosen the bar clamps on my Bike and "roll" the buckhorns ahead, in effect lifting the grips about an inch-and-a-half. Once set this way, I found the position waaaay more comfortable ... lifted my elbows and straightened my arms some ... improved my steering and cornering almost as good as I found with the S40's set up! :)

To me,drags are the best for handling.

I have stock my '06 risers with '87 buckhorns.  Got the buckhorns on here for 20 shipped.  I had to buy a longer brake line.  I find them more comfortable on the longer rides with few turns.  I think it gives the bike a slightly longer flowing look too.

I just bought a set of 4" straight risers and a no rise drag bar from JCwhitney.com.  Pretty decent prices, came in under $100 when it was all said and done.

How are these after market bars for vibration?  Aren't the stock bars heavy to help with vibration?

I have no clue, mine are still in the mail.  But I'll report back in 6-10 days.

The stock bars have weights just a little ways into each end.  I have a set of 36" drag bars that I filled with BBs and put epoxy into each end to seal them in.  They work very well.  Of course, I also have Kuryakyn ISO grips, which dampen a lot of vibration on their own.

I am in the Middle of tailoring the bike with the right Bars.

My Us Import to the UK has Drag Bars with 4" Risers, but it was doing my clutch thumb in.

Rotating the levers to a more vertical position improved the hold but B***ERD up the Mirrors, so I split the difference.

Got New Mirrors with Better Adjustment, but that means a lot of fiddling, of which I am still in the middle of!!!!

My Local Independent is a Harley Man and since the demise of the Local Polaris Agent, he is taking on the care of a number of Victories.

A Committee discussion, came to the conclusion that my short Arms and Legs mean that I need to go for 2 Inch Risers and bars with a slight pull back, not as severe as the Stock "Buckhorns" which I also had with the bike.

I will let you know what they are like when I get Them.

These are "Highway Hawk" supplied in the UK.

Demin - I cant tell if those are pullback risers.
I like your setup and want to mimic with the drag and 4 inch risers.
I was looking on ebay for 4 inch risers.  Would any set work with my 86'? If not what diameter size did you buy.

Thanks!

I also adjusted the angle on my '40.  Got the grips up an inch or 2 and it does feel better.
I have to admit I was wondering if the buckhorn bars would be more comfortable, though.

ok, everyone line up for the grat bar swap..........................
drag bars to the right, buckhorns to the left, everyone else in the middle........................

Pullback risers are short things.  On the older biks, the Drag bar risers were just a spacer added to raise them up.   Look at one of the microfische sites.  I noticed that on the S40's the riser has a metal piece between the two up-rights.  Probably makes it sitffer for better control.   I saw somewhere here that someone was having an issue with getting a tach bracket on  because that metal was in the way.

Latimer, what jet sizes did you use when you re-jetted.  Also what thickness (or # of washers) did you use for the white-spacer mod.  Been chasing a problem all week.

Out of the dozen or so bars I've tried on my Savages so far, I've liked these 2" rise "drag" bars the best:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=360050424874

Should mention, however, that the knurling is a bit narrow on the bars since they are meant for a H-D, so some of the knurling shows when you have them installed.

I've had them on several height and degree of pullback risers, and they've felt good to me on all of them. I don't know if they're high enough to use with the stock short risers though. (YMMV, as everyone seems to have different tastes in bars. I tend to like mine a bit wide, and with only a medium amount of pull back.)

And speaking of risers... when shopping for risers be aware that you can use the two-piece Harley type on a Savage; but not the ones that use the one piece cap. The only problem with using the two-piece ones is that you have to drill/grind/file out the holes in your chromed washers that tighten the rubber isolation grommets onto the triple tree; because the H-D risers use a 1/2"-13 bolt for mounting; which is slightly larger than the stock Suzuki metric stud.

I put in a 50 and 150 and 2 washers for the spacer.  I had to significantly back out my idle mixture screw after rejetting and putting on a new muffler, but after that the backfire has disappeared completely.

Title: Re: Bars and Risers
Post by rpgpgmr on 05/09/08 at 12:24:22

A 50 pilot jet?  They come stock with a 52.5 and the one Lancer sells is a 55.  Did you get the 50 also from Lancer?

Tonight I'm planning on doing the following:

Pilot jet:  From 55 back down to stock 52.5
Main jet:  From 155 down to a 152.5
White spacer:  From 2 washers down to 1 (maybe even none)
My idle mixture screw is at 3 1/2 turns which is basically wide open.

I'm getting desperate to kill that backfire!  >:(

Mine is a 96... not sure what the stock is but I thought it was less than 50.  I bought this kit off ebay, and dropped it in.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/SUZUKI-SAVAGE-LS650-S40-HI-PERFORMANCE-STAGE-I-JET-KIT_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ35597QQihZ005QQitemZ150238938643QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWD1V

Mine still backfires a bit on decel, but I think thats from my loose header to muffler connection.

Title: Re: Bars and Risers
Post by rpgpgmr on 05/09/08 at 12:38:28

The '96 came with a 52.5 pilot too just like the new ones so you actually went down a size.  That's the first time I've heard of that, but it worked and that is what is important ... I may try that myself after this next attempt.

I had a loose muffler to head pipe connection problem too.  The problem was the fitting had a slit in it.  Air was escaping through this slit.  Went to Advance Auto Parts and picked up an exhaust fitting that is 1 5/8 inner diameter (which is the thickness of our head pipe at the connection point) ... it worked great.  Check there for exhaust fittings.

Thanks I'll give that a shot.

If you have trouble getting the fitting started on the pipe, Dremel out a few small slits and bend them back slightly.  Once it gets started you're in business.  8-)

Quoting myself so that we can catch up.

I have put on the new pull back bars and lowered the risers to 2".

What I have now instead of the Stock Buck Horn or the straight trail style on 4" Risers, is pull back bars exactly the same as the buck horn stock bars, but 2" wider, ridden it back from the shop and it fels real comfy, I can also see past me in the mirrors!!!!! ;D
