Title: Securing the header pipe to the cylinder. Post by rpgpgmr on 04/11/08 at 07:03:36 I am not convinced that my header pipe is sealed securely enough to the cylinder. I have tightened it within my strength, but I'm not convinced the connection is sealed enough. Is there a sealant or gasket or something that we can use to secure the header? I'm not getting NEARLY as much crackling and popping as I was before I found the exhaust leak, but I'm a bit paranoid about the header pipe connection. |

Title: Re: Securing the header pipe to the cylinder. Post by Chopped on 04/11/08 at 07:31:49 be careful on using your strength to tighten it. The Head is Aluminum and the bolt id steel... not a good combination. I found out that the last guy that worked on my bike had stripped the threads in the head. I coulnd't really replace the bolt with a bigger one, so I bored it out and put in some Heli-coils. Worked like a charm... just a little advice from someone elses mistakes. Replace the gasket!!!! |

Title: Re: Securing the header pipe to the cylinder. Post by - Mike - on 04/11/08 at 11:03:13 Replace the gasket & add a thin film of high temp sealant then just seat it snugly. The sealant probably isn't necessary with a new gasket, but it will add to your peace of mind. I have to pull the front header from my vstar with every oil filter change. I throw a thin film of sealant on each time just to get more life out of the gasket and hold it there while I'm trying to reassemble. |
