What did you pay for your Savage/S40 when you got it and how much do you have into it in total.  I paid $2000 for my 04 and will have about $2400 into it in the next month.

$5 for wire ties
$30 for spark plug, wrenches, sockets
$50 in misc parts and spark plug tool

$15 for jets

$1440 so far, plus I spent a lot registering (3 years back = $223)
and insuring it

Oh and

Paid $1100 for my '87. I've probably put... I don't know, I'd guess around $500 into it. Never felt the need to total it up. I measure smiles per miles...

I paid $1650 for mine.

So for I have:

K&N Pod filter $45.00
Jetset for carb $7.00
Factory engine guard $89.00
Kyurkyan ISO Dually foot pegs $207.00 (both stock barrel pegs replaced plus an off-set pair for the engine guard.
Factory luggage rack $89.00
Dowco Iron Rider overnight bag $75.00
Rapid Transit Triple Tree Bag $29.00
Progressive Suspension 412-4005c rear shocks $205.00
Lambskin seat cover $20.00

So, I have $766.00 in goodies.  Thats $2416.00 for a custom cruiser.

Of course, that will go up slightly when my custom saddle bags and custom saddle are done in 2 weeks ($500.00 for both.  All leather, hand made... I can't wait!)

So all told , I have, what, $2900.00 in the bike.  Less than I can get a used stock S40 for at the stealership.

To date:

$1200 for a stock '99 (well almost stock, it has a MAC muffler on it)
$50 for two new turn signals
$50 (as best as I can remember) for risers and drag bars
$120 for pegs and rubber (tires were old, I broke three of them)
$160 for new tires
$80 for new brake pads front and rear (2 sets front, 1 set rear, caliper was sticking)
$160 for a stock cam chain and tensioner from the dealership
$105 for a complete Vesrah gasket kit (in case I needed it)
$80 ? (I don't recall what they cost per each, help me out here) for two of the new and improved can chains when I need them

sooooooooo... grand total

Roughly 2,000 for the reliable, fun bike I ride almost every day.

Not bad, considering that most of the riders I know didn't even purchase their bikes for less than $5K.

I am working on the bobber modifications right now.  By the time I get done with them, I will maybe have another $500 in (I am going  cheap, I like the rat-style bikes).  Not bad for a custom ride I did myself.

I am planning on a trailer fender, custom made license plate bracket, old-skool taillight, smaller turn signals, either a larger headlight or duals, a sissy bar (which doubles as fender struts), rejet, new pod filter from Lancer, grease trap mod on said filter, and a spring-mounted seat.

I forgot the new caliper seals and the brake cleaner to clean out the caliper.  Toss in another $10.  I'm still golden!  [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

This does not include the new helmet I had to purchase when I decided to see how fast i could do figure-8's in the church parking lot up the street.  Or the doctor visit to tell me I had a bad ankle sprain.  Or the antiseptic to clean out the rash on my hand.  Why yes, I had had too many beers, why do you ask?

Bike was $1600 and another $750 in improvements and goodies.  That's $2350 and still a real cheap, very custom bike.  Still wanting to add another $500 in goodies and improvements.  SWEET!

Post by KwakNut on 04/09/08 at 01:43:27

I bought an 8000 mile bike with engine problems and tatty paint/chrome just to use as a round town workhorse, and the idea was to spend as little as possible to get it running:

$500                  Initial purchase
$225                  Lancer's cam and cam chain
$70                  Gasket set
$30                  Oil
$8                  Oil filter
$40                  Selection of jets

$873 to buy the bike, fix it and have it ready to ride - except, I just couldn't stop myself from fiddling, so I spent another:

$50                  Barrel skim
$55                  Lancer's cam chain
$56                  Factory head gasket
$140                  New factory rocker arms
$80                  Good used front fender
$90                  Re-chromed foot controls
$120                  Re-chromed rear wheel
$70                  Chrome side panels
$22                  Used replacement head side covers
$70                  Replacement handle bars
$90                  Paints
$70                  K&N
$15                  Fork seals
$16                  Iridium plug
$160                  New old stock drive belt

So, another $1104 totalling $1977 so far - and (I wish I hadn't added this up), still the following to buy (roughly):

$100                  Chrome plating other component
$110                  Shortened rear springs
$80                  Custom mirrors
$80                  Custom indicators
$360                  Raask exhaust

I'll be doing a few more mods at no cost as well like making forward control hangers, modifying the seat and sissy bar and some other touches. Head has been ported, frame and swingarm painted, lots of alloy polished to mirror finish, overall the bike is going to be a smart looking machine.
Another estyimated $730 to go, so it will be about $2700 all-in, but that will be for a fully renovated bike with a sorted motor, shiny chrome, nice paint and a mild custom look.  Should have it finished for about mid-May if all goes well (would be sooner but I have other jobs to do when I'm home at the weekend and the wife has other ideas about my priorities!).

I paid $4400 for an '06 S40 from the dealership that had never been started in August of last year.  In fact, when I took delivery, it had .2 miles on it where they took it to fill it up.

I took it to the dealership for it's 600 mile service, at $129, I ain't doing again.

I've added a Suzuki OEM windscreen that I paid $80 for from Copperhead.

Other than that, I've put 1800+ miles and $96 in gas. :)

$1800 for an '01 Savage with 8600mi, new carb, new Dunlops.

Basically stock except for a Suzuki windshield, on dibs list for forward controls.

No plans to add anything else except some sort of bag or trunk.  Maybe a luggage rack for said bag, maybe engine guards.

900€ (1430$) for a '95 Savage
almost stock, some visual details, cagiva front wheel\disc\caliper and HD muffler.

600€ (950$  :-X ) for a stock cam chain and tensioner

400€ (635$) paid by the insurance 'cause of an accident, for custom mirror, taillight, handle bar, raisers, handles grip.

190€ (300$) for some Lancer stuff...  ;)

....plus 100€ (170$) for customs taxes!!!  >:(

And it does not work from October 2006, 'cause oil leak, almost slick tires and many small bureaucratic matters that only an italian can understand!  >:(

Tkat Brace 90
Dyna Muff  50
Saddle Bags 60
Bag Braket   40
Driver backrest 150

P.S. Hey keithert, what part of northern IL are you in?  I wonder if we ride by the same cornfields.

$593 +or -, for a BRAND NEW 07!!!!

Here`s how....$4000  financed on sale spankin` new `07...meanwhile I worked a deal out [$1000 down and the balance in 3 months to a pal] to jettison a huge pile of old jap and brit stuff, so I made 4 $59 payments.....or $236 to the Suzi company, plus $50 for a used Super Trap, $120 into making a better saddle,$90 to Tkat, $50 for better tail lights, $47 for a luggage rack, probably a few more bucks for whatever small stuff.

I`m into my NEW Suzi for $593. I miss my pile o' junk, but not as much as I like my NEW [well, 3700 miles now] Savage.

My '97 cost $1799. It came with saddle bags, windshield, custom made crash bar, and heated grips. The saddles bags are reinforced with stainless steel sides so they don't sag.

I bought it from it's original owner. He made the crash bar and stainless steel sides himself. He babied the thing so much it literally looks brand new. Not so much as a smudge on it, let alone a scratch.

All I have in it is 6 bucks for a tank of gas.  :)

You can see it here http://i139.photobucket.com/albums/q292/infrared41/DSC_0076.jpg

I love it.

Well, since I have three of them at the moment, and I've swapped accessories around between them a bit it is somewhat difficult to itemize... But roughly... I have the most in my first 1987 at maybe $1800 total including tags, tax, title and accessories. The two 99s I have less than $1400 apiece into all inclusive. So I've got maybe $4500-$4600 into the three of them and a bunch of extra exhaust, handlebars, risers, tires and batteries and other misc. accessories.

BTW, I'm considering selling the old 87 at a loss. Still under 7k miles!!! Runs great, but needs some appearance TLC. May be some flexibility in what accessories go with: handlebars, risers and seat etc... I let go with it. I'm thinking in the $1400-$1600 range if anyone is interested. I'm in Tulsa, and my email on this site is for real.

OEM windshield
OEM saddle bags

Sportster muffler
Fresh oil change (synthetic) and minor tune-up for this season's riding.

Add about $216 for Ohio sales tax, and $24 for title transfer fees.

Great..and I can't remember crap..let me try...:

2001 On Ebay: $1837 + $50ish in gas for the ride to pick it up. 26k miles on it.

Came with problems and issues, a windshield, a ding and a few scratches, and after market exhaust that was broken (Supertrapp).  :(
Since I've had it:

  • $5.88  -saddlebags (Brand new!!)
    $6-700.00 -to replace the transmission.
$40- mirrors (which I'm going to replace again)
$40ish- floor boards that I modded to fit.
$230ish- new Supertrapp (with the baffle actually there  ;D)
    $15- jet kit
    $5- spark plug
    $60ish- two batteries since 2005
    $10-20 -stock paint/clear coat pen.
    Too much in gas.
WAY too much in repairs/ tune up/ tires.

Items I intend on purchasing next week:

  • $92.95 -HD Sportster Seat
    $8 - Misc screws/bolts/ 12" x 12" T Strap
    $2-250- New rear Progressive shocks.
    ?- New mirrors
    ?- New grips.

Maybe more to come!

1988 LS650P w/ 15k miles.  KBB Value $1535 (NADA like $950ish, they are nuts).

$800 Bike cost (Not counting $50 to get it)
$25 (Plug, gasket, O-Ring)
$25 (Oil, plug, filter)
$65 (Header, Directional)
$22 Jet kit
$305 Tires
$28.00 Side Covers
$28.89 Pegs
$10.00 End Caps
$6.93 Swing Arm Plugs
$51.43 Fork/Dust Seals & Clip

Total Damage: $1367.25
Self imposed investment cap: $1500
Money Left to play with: $132.95 left

This does not include gear like saddle bags, new helmet, etc as that stuff is not really part of the bike ($215ish).  Does not include $140ish to register it or insurance.  I may be paying the stealership to do the fork seals due to time constraints and laziness (was a REAL PITA on my last bike).

So no matter what when I sell the bike it looks like I will be in the red, the trick is to keep the red as little as possible lol.

Bought my '87 for $1050.00, and the guy threw in a new front wheel, Guardian cover and new HJC 1/2 helmet.
Bike came with Brandywine Metal Flake paint, SuperTrapp, Flame mirrors, sissy bar and plug cap leak

What I put into it so far:
*Chrome Highway Hawk rider pegs-$50.00.
*Rear rack, forget how much I paid, think around $60 and well worth it.
*Disk 6 pack and open end cap for the Trapp, but sold them at about a $15 loss. Didn't care for the sound.
* Saddle bags and supports-$70.00 shipped.
* Big Crank. I forget what I paid for it, got it from battery mart.
* Bought a dented tank on ebay for $26.00, but sold it to a forum member for the cost of shipping. Lost a couple of bucks, but found a better deal (see below) on a tank with no body work required).
* Bought a "like new" tank (Still has safety stickers) from a 2005 for under $50.00 shipped, which will be stripped and painted at some point soon.
* Used odds and ends after the fall, spent about $70.00 so far for rear signals, brake lever and new cover.

- a lot of carb's and assorted mufflers, custom made performance cam, bored cyl with silicone carbide, a couple of tanks and several seats, a few extra wheels and brake systems....... est. about $3k +/- but sold many parts also, plus and insurance settlement for road damage, so all together I am probably on the upside $1-2 k   :D

at least $3,000 of my own elbow grease,... I'm not gonna' count that...

tires and oil,..... not gonna' count that either...

...the older she gets, the less she's worth, and the more I put in her, but I don't care...
I wouldn't sell her for less than $5,000..........

Well, I'm probably up there the most.
I really can't remember , and I'm not going excavating for all the reciepts; but it's something like
New '08 S40 with 2 miles: $4800
Forward controls:             $150 (I think)
Saddlebags:                    $60
Forkboots:                       $17
Bugs in teeth, crap eating grin: priceless
:) :)

I'm up there way Jay... My leftover 07 when I bought it in April 08 was $4000 (plus taxes and tags, and the crappy extra fees that get tossed on).

Add on the windshield, sissybar set, saddlebags and brackets, and Winglerline highway bars for the big parts... Performance stuff like the diamond jim exhaust, cone filter, rejet are there but cheap... And on the list of things to add on are my LED tail light, new turn signals (for the bigger bags to fit), sideways plate mount, etc.

I don't remember the prices for everything... But, most of them were cheaper than what I'd pay at the dealers by finding great deals off EBay, selling OEM parts, etc.

I got a 2002 with about 7500 miles for $2250 from the original owner,  private seller. (purchased from forum member Geo)

had:
Dyno jet kit
Supertrapp
Willie and max bags
Windshield
Side license plate mount.
Crankcase breater tube rerouted to outside
maintenance log since since purchased from dealer
+ all original parts (including old spark plugs)

I have done:
raised seat mod - about 1.5" more comfy ::)

More to come -- have to wait to take 16 hour rider course to get license (FL)- drives me nuts staring at it in the garage and only being able to ride on backroads for fear of police LOL.

wheels - 2250
registration - dont remember
Rider safty class - 225
rescheduling fee - 75

getting license to thump around town - priceless ;D

I paid $1650 for mine.

Hope you'll be posting pics of those new leather goods.

WoW.  A thread like this makes me wonder why did I ever buy new???

That's a good question.

From what I've read so far in this thread, the S40 doesn't seem to hold its value nearly as well as the Honda Rebel I own.  That's a bit scary since there don't seem to be many of these in the Baton Rouge area (where I live). I'd love to find a used one for sale within, say, 250 miles of here. NOTE: I don't have an S40 yet, and I'm not planning to sell my Rebel when I get one.

I'm guessing that most owners/members would not recommend buying new because of the price, and with the economy in the doldrums, it's looking like the MSRPs of most things will be going WAY UP.
