Title: TIme for Spark Plug Renewal
Post by Savagegirl on 04/03/08 at 14:16:29

Hi Guys, Well, it's warmn' up and I put a new battery on my '03 and changed a fuse. And I would like to change my spark plug, but my manual has this generalized instruction to take seat off, remove two scews and remove gas tank , slide it back and lift. OK! This where I get crazy. The gas tank won't move, I got the fuel line holding it. Do I remove the fuel line/reserve stuff :-/? Pleas help. desparate to get on the road! Savagegirl

I also had trouble.  It does not want to move.  This is a case where excessive force may be required.  The tank has a couple of u-shaped catchy things that are gripping a rubber thingy on the frame.  If it hasn't been moved for while I think it gets sticky-stuck.

It has been a while since I did mine so I don't remember a thing about it.  On mine it was a LOT easier to remove the tank after draining the fuel into a JerryCan and removing the petcock.  Once loose, I disconnected the speedo cable at the speedometer.  I did it twice as I forgot to hook the speedo cable back up the first time I re-installed.

The petcock likes to get in the way on mine.  Try pulling the back of the tank to the left side (petcock side) then lift up.  When the rear is free, then you have to pull firmly in the front to loose it from the rubber mounts.

...After loosing the fuel line, vacuum hose and speedo cable that is...

Wow, I am looking forward to changing my spark plug. So I need to drain my gas tank first?

No,just turn it to ON position, gas will not run out.It is vacuum operated. No vacuum=no fuel.

Hint,   take some black Duct tape and put some on the frame where the petcock hits.  It will save the paint.....
