Title: Savage Taillight / Brake light mod question
Post by superior on 03/30/08 at 13:12:04

I have a 1986 Savage and I am looking to mod the tail-light / brake light. I have installed a side-mount vertical license plate and I'm going to be repainting the fenders and gas tank I wish to install an oval or cat-eye type of a brake light mounted just underneath the rear fender.

I'm planning on filling the holes left from the stock taillight before I paint it.

Any ideas on what size of taillight will fit underneath the rear fender snugly. I'm not sure if anybody has had any experience with these or what size fits underneath the fender to match the curvature of the fender.

I know there is lots of these available on e b a y but if you know the correct size or style that would be helpful

Thanks!!

I'm thinking of trying this in place of the tail light and plate mount.

Here is a link to the one I got. It installed beautifully on my Savage. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/SIDE-MOUNT-LICENSE-PLATE-KIT-V-ROD-FXR-DYNA-SPORTSTER_W0QQitemZ220218103707QQihZ012QQcategoryZ35575QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

I liked it because it looks trick and has the built in LED's. I now am planning on finding a cateye or oval brake light to place underneath the  rear fender so the bike looks stream lined.

Suggestions on the cateye or oval brakelight?

I think a Cateye would fit real good.

I think it was WD who had an early intruder fender on his for the under fender tail light.  Although not any more.

Thanks for the message? Do you know the measurements of the cateye that would work best? Length and height?

Just about any of them except this one it's a little too wide. You can use the factory mount to do it also.

That's what I originally had in mind Demin.

But to me, looks like the cateye is just a little bit too wide.

I got the bug about the plate cracking (cause it is) and want to add a backup plate.

The one I have on the black bike is actually called a snake eye.I just happened to have a cateye.I held it up for the pic so you could get an idea of what it looked like.I'll just put the url, because pic is huge. You can click on it for bigger image though.

The cheap one -- $15 eBay buy-it-now.  It mounts to the existing holes and replaces the license plate light.  It has a window to illuminate the plate.:

I did it so the sissybarbag could ride lower:

With the turnsignals turned into run/brake lights (click and wait for movie):

That is exactly what I'm looking for...except i need it to be about 3/4" less wide, so I can fit it up in the space (filling out the gaps) so it fits nice and snug up under the fender.

Thanks, were getting pretty close here. I'm thinking about riding my bike down to the local after-market motorcycle shop and seeing if I can  find one to fit almost exactly.

Looking to get a seamless fit... crossing my fingers

....

That's a '28-'31 Model-A taillight, not a '32.  Available for $20: http://www.speedwaymotors.com/p/3011,433_Model-A-Stainless-Taillight.html  (You'll want a left lamp, which has the clear window to illuminate the plate.)
Get a piece of sheet steel, cut to shape, drill a few holes, a couple of bends, paint to match your frame color, add the above lamp and a chrome license plate frame.....

This is even easier no need to fill the holes, just cover them.

Good stuff here!  Once i get my bike put back together and find the correct tail-light I'll post some pictures. I'm just waiting for a part for my clutch...then I'm going to drive my savage to the motorcycle aftermarket parts store and have them match up a slimline cat eye to snugly fit under the rear fender...

Keep up the great pics! Lots of ideas here
