Title: Autosol review & oil flter o-ring question
Post by photojoe on 03/30/08 at 11:35:20

Greetings all:
After changing my oil, I decided to try Autosol metal polish for my chrome, which is on the verge of pitting. A bit of elbow grease, and found the stuff to work very well indeed. Not saying that it looks brand new, but it looks a lot better than it did. No scratches at all.

One thing that I forgot after changing the oil and filter was that I didn't included the small o-ring that sits in the center of the filter. I'm hoping that the old one is still where it's supposed to be. I dug out the old filter and trash from the oil change and didn't notice the o-ring anywhere. Maybe it was never on in the first place, who knows. Now I'm wondering how important that little ring is, and what job it performs. Just to clarify, I'm not referring to the large o-ring embedded in the filter case. That I changed.

It's driving me crazy. I know that once I pull that oil filter case off, the dam will be broken. Thanks in advance for any advice or suggestions.

naw it won't leak much - certainly some - most of the oil is in the case if you wait few minutes after it runs - needs to be there for the filter to function correct

Thanks RT, yeah I kind of figured that I better get back in there. Nice and cold here in the Northeast, which would be a good thing for this type of little project. Thanks again.

If you lean the bike over, it won't leak more than a tablespoon.

I took off the clutch cover without loosing much that way.

I rested the upper shock support on a 2 1/2 gal gerry can.

Thanks. Yeah, I opened it back up today and saw the little bugger was seated right where it was supposed to be. Lost hardly any oil at all. Now I can focus on getting the rest of the bike lubed and cleaned up. Looks like the front end of the bike was sitting uncovered for quite a while.
Thanks again.
