Title: S40 tach ?
Post by nightman on 03/24/08 at 18:52:08

I recently bought a tach for my 05 S40, but the diag supplied is pretty lame. Anyone out there installed one on an S40? Any info would be humunglously (new word) more than I have right now.... :-[

Ok I went down the wrong path with a fellow on here before - so tell me how many wires do you have on the tach - are any labled?

pretty easy to hook up - let's hope the tach has 4 wires and no cables

Thanks for replying. Yup, it's got 4 wires. And a little diagram with it.
Red to ignition on, blue to lamp on, black to gnd, green to negative of coil. Ground is easy to find, but without a diagram, how do I find the other points, especially the coil. Is there one with solid state ignition?
As u can tell, I'm no auto mechanic  :-[

Tach on the LS650 is fairly simple to wire if you have the correct tach.

The green wire goes to the "Black with yellow stripe" wire on the ignition coil under the tank.  Also, you can get power from the wires going to the handle bars (also under the tank), the orange wire is switched power.  I wired my tach light into it also since we don't have a "run with lights off" option.  Ground can go on one of the screws holding the Ign coil to the frame.

Also, the Ign coil uses a almost std blade connector, so I made a Y connector (also called a tap) from connectors I got at the local auto parts store (Auto-Zone).  That way I can easily disconnect the tach if I want.  Note: spend the money and buy the shielded / covered connectors.

Here's a good thread that Greg posted with pict's of the electrical system

Great info! Thanks so much. I can't wait to give 'er a try, of course as soon as the 4 feet of snow melts away from the shed door!

humunglously

Hu mung lously

I know, It IS your word & all, but I am thinking maybe it could use a little tuning// I think I would ditch the L after the G for
Hu mung OUsly, seems it would be a lot easier to say.. might come out
Hu Mun Gus Lee

I  hope I dint mess your new word up too badly. I just like to modify stuff. Good luck with your tach.

Your right. There's no problem noin (new word again) when to shift. I just like to dress her up a bit. I'd go for a nice chrome analog clock if I could find one. Not with a pendulum though...
Couldn't find gianormas. Butt I like it. Maybe it's gianormasly? ::)

Great pix guys. Thanks. That's just what I was looking for. And I like the position of the tach.
Chrome is nice. I'm like an old crow I guess. Liking shiny things. I even replaced my oil filler cap for a chrome one.
It's nice to have a clock so I can get home in time to cook the wife some  supper.  ;)
I'll send a picture of my bike once I figure out how.

I don't know, sluggo. I'm new to Savages, and with the wind noise and helmet slap that I am getting from our current high wind levels I have trouble knowing when to shift. I can't hear the engine, and I can't feel anything other than the constant whacking of my helmet. I'd love to have a tach right now. The only time that I have a clue is when I am running downwind.

Evidently it was removed by the PO. Is there anything on it that I should know?

Put it online someplace, right click on it, select properties, highlight/copy the location url, paste that in between the [ img ] (paste here) [ /img ]

*[img][/img]* - These show up if you click on the third button from the left above the "U on top of the box where you type a post.

Hmmm, does this make sense????

ENM PT15,$25 Dollar tach/hrs meter, nothing fancy, selfcontained, 1 wire to ground,1 wire wrapped around the sparkplugwire a few time. Now have 115 hrs on it. Velcro mounted on a small aluminum bracket which is bolted underneath the mirror tie down bolt.
It's update rate of once per second is to slow to be any good in the lower gears but if I am at 60mph I know I'm in top gear when it reads 4130 rpm. Also great for setting idle without choke, when cold, at 1500 rpm till cylinder is warmed up. With help from the $30 thottle lock. Also great to set idle/mixture.
But you're right, You really do not need a tach cause this bike will run out of breath (read accelerates slower) up in the revs, so, it's time to shift.

Put the picture anywhere it can be accessed online, aol has hometown, bikepic's, and there's one here, savageriders.com or something like that for a fee.

Important! Once you got your picture on-line, right click on the picture, select properties, there's a URL address and a name which ends with '.jpg'  If you just copy the URL address it won't include the '.jpg' and it won't work.  Add the .jpg by hand.

Title: Re: S40 tach ?

Well, I found it on the net, e-bay, from a company that I'm sure you guys already know about. I'm at my camp right now watching the flood waters rise, and I don't have the info here. I'll post it when I go home in a day or two. The company has the letters DZ in their logo, which stands for Denise and Zane. I believe they are in Arizona. They were great to deal with. I ordered it on a Monday from my home in Eastern Canada, paid for it via Paypal on Tuesday morning, drove to my sis's place in New Hampshire on Friday, and it was there. $75 for the the tach, a few bucks for the the nice chrome mount.
