is there a good alternative to purchasing the suzuki sissy bar ($150) ? Are there any others that fit? what have ya'll done?

Found http://www.onlinemetals.com/ who will sell you 5/8" square hot-rolled mild steel bars -- which you can then bend to desired shape and drill and tap to replace the original.  Shipping charges will kill you.

if you're not in too much of a hurry you could keep an eye on ebay. i see them there quite often at reasonable cost.

if bike never had sissy bar you'll need new side rails for the oem sissy bar
