Title: Savage Oil Leaking / Head Bolt Snapped / Help Thx.
Post by superior on 03/14/08 at 20:16:36

I noticed over the past few weeks that my head gasket was leaking. So I tried to see if I could tighten the head cover bolts down a bit more and fix it. I had one of the bolts SNAP and now I have the threads to this bold still stuck in the cylinder head. Now the bike runs, but it leaks oil like crazy.

Can I remove the Head Cover with the Engine still in the frame? or do I need to remove the entire Engine from the frame before I remove the Head Cover?

This is a 1986 Model LS650 Suzuki Savage.

Thanks,

Steve

Yes, most of the time.  I was able to get mine off.
Some frames are tight and you got to take the engine out.
Some are a little tight and you can drop the engine in the frame.

There's one bolt in the center that you got to take the cover off to get out.  Just remember to put it back with the cover, I didn't.  And had to drop the engine in the frame.

While you got it off, check your cam chain and torque your head bolts.   ;D

Thanks, I forgot to mention that this 1986 only has about 5,100 miles on it (pretty low milage for the bike) and the engine runs real strong. I will inspect the cam chain but I don't think it will have any problems because of the low milage.

I have customized the following on the bike:

Installed a 2005 Carb with the jet kit and spacer mod.
Installed a Harley Sportster Seat (looks real good)
Installed a Harley Screamin Eagle FXR Turnout Muffler (Sounds Great & Loud)
Installed a K&N Cone Filter
Installed aftermarket smaller Turn Signals that are chrome lenses that flash amber
Installed 2005 Savage Rear Fender Chrome Strips (Now the Ugly brakcet for the backrest seat is gone and the backrest has been removed, it looks real sleek with the Sportster seat)

Thanks for the help and feedback.

Steve

you should be able to take the head cover off - replace at least seal the rubber plug as it is the cause of most oil leaks on the head - have the engine at tdcc when you pull it - here's a thread you should look over completely if you haven't

You might try tightening the big thru bolts, if they're not tight, they can leak.
Also, the oil filter cover has an O-ring, if it was damaged or slipped out durring install...
