Title: New Fenders from Oldy's -- UPDATED 3/29
Post by Gary On A Savage on 03/04/08 at 08:47:32

I just order 2 new composite fenders from Oldy's Custom Composites ( http://www.oldinc.com/oldys.htm ).  I've been eyeing these for months, but just waiting for the right time (and money) to get them.  Here is what I ordered:

Front (in 5" special order): http://www.oldinc.com/oldysfk.htm

http://www.oldinc.com/kf6.5c.jpg

Rear (7"): http://www.oldinc.com/oldyscf.htm

http://www.oldinc.com/cf7a.jpg

Cost: $168 shipped.

Yes, I'm going the "classic" look.  Painting them forest green (toying with some black accent).  Viv's savage gave me the idea.

Oh My God!  That is EXACTLY what I want!  The old school pull back bars, fat fenders!  Where did you find that pic?

I think I have a new project brewing in my head......

cool lookin, fer sure... but green is an "unlucky," to say the least color for motorcycles or race cars...

used to be a bit more than bad taste, to show up on a green motorcycle

Unlucky or not, I've had more positive comments on it since I painted my bike green!  One guy thought it was an old triumph.  So I'm probably going to still paint it green.

Oh, I adore my wife.  :D

Not only can she read (and speak) German, she's given me the go ahead on the project.

I already ordered the fenders (I got a pair of FLH fenders off a crash bike on ebay.  They're dented and scratched, but I worked in a body shop for a while and I'm planning to paint them anyway!

I found a set of Dunlop D404s in whitewall and I found a place to order the 1" pull back bars.

My plan is to roller the bike with enamel (someone already did that here and I like the 'old school' finish.)  I'm going with an Indian red with maize accents and pinstriping.  I'm also going to rebadge the tank with the script Indian.

What I'm hoping to do next is get all the parts then find myself a crashed Savage.  That way I can still ride, while I take my time fabricating and painting my new 'Indian'.

I'm sooooo pumped....

skrapiron,

I rolled my paint last fall using rustoleum from instructions I found searching the internet.  Turned out real good and is easier and cheaper to do than a rattlecan job.  It doesn't have that "plastic" look you get from a clear coat but looks like the old single stage paint jobs.  Polishes to a nice shine (the key is in the buffing).

My dad is an old body shop mechanic/painter.  When I told him about it he just said, "oh yeah, we used to do that".

Update: Got the fenders in last Friday.  Really like the looks.  The front fender was a special size order and the finish was still rough.  I sanded it down pretty good, but it still needs some more work before painting.  The rear fender has been sanded and primed, ready for paint.

I was able to mock them up today.  The front will be pretty straight forward to mount.  The back's going to need some special handling to get it to fit good.  Here's some pics.

looks great! are you gonna keep the front fender how it is or rotate it forward a bit so that the flat line is parallel to the ground like in vivs?

The front's leaning back too much in the picture, but I want it to lean back and not be level.  Also, I'm going to lean the back a little more than it is.  Just can't tell until I get a tire back there to sight it right.

Sweet bike!  After all that work, I notice it still has the big ugly stock muffler! That would have to go!

oh yeah you can make the savage into anything you like, it's a very versitile platform, i believe suzuki knows this and actually makes money on it.

bagger, bobber, classic it's all been done with a savage.

i see the savage as being the VW of the motorcycle world.  you could/can do some pretty wild stuff them.

Did your wife say if the German script says where to get those pull back handlebars?  I've never found ones just like those.

its been years but james stewart and ricky carmichael both were kawasaki riders i think james still is.

sweet fenders i love em!
to size them down before you upload them right click on them.. open with. open with ms paint then you can go to stretch/skew and get them smaller say %40. will also take less space on your computer and load/upload faster online.
