Title: Smoke and fire!!
Post by luis on 02/29/08 at 16:06:53

Hello everybody
I own a 1995 Ls650
After changing the fuse, which had blown, i started the engine and it all seemed ok. Then it started a smoke and fire, right in front of the bike, behind the headlight.
Can anyone tell me what happened?

The gods were mad.......

Actually, that is a possible pinch/wear point on the harness.  I remember a post a while back.  Most likely the fuse is blown again.   Look close and find out where the wire is damaged.  Then, get some electrical tape and wrap the spot.

the fire should help you locate the short.

Ah, short, yes, but if you replaced the blown fuse with a higher amp one, that is why the magic blue smoke leaked out instead of the new fuse blowing.

i thought everyone knew that electronics run on smoke, let it out and the piece never works again.  can't put the smoke back in.

Well, mayebe YOU can't, but I was in the Air Force & they sent me to 9 months of 8 hours a day electronic school. There was a Chief Master Sergeant who had been working in electronics since Ben Franklin first flew the kite in the storm. He had a special smoke injector widget that was made by Q of 007 fame & I stole it. So there. ( I wont go to hell for lying if it's so obvious as that, will i? )

Well, until i can get my hands on one of those 007 gadgets 8-), i'll be looking for a short circuit, allthough the fuse i placed was the standard 20 Amp.

Sparks and smoke can come as low as a few amps.  Saw a 5 amp Rupp mini-bike sparking up a storm in the Headlight bucket.  Reflector was loose so ground path was intermittant.

Keep us posted once you find the probelm.  Pict's must be nice too.....

Luis
You said you replaced the fuse. Did you get the replacement from Harbor Fright?  At the shop that I work in we recived a service bul.
On fuses made in China testing showed 10A not opening the cir. till 38 Amps 20A over 40 amps The wireing on these bikes can't handle these high draws so make sure you find the short or long whatever.
