Title: uphill troubles
Post by Robertomoe on 02/27/08 at 15:20:31

The road that my school's main entrance is off of is a long uphill climb and 75% of the time I get stuck at the light waiting for a left turn.  It seems like the bike always wants to stall out, but so far I've been sweating my nuts off and keeping the rpm high as to prevent that.

The bike is running lean right now.

Is this from a float issue?  Will it be fine once I fatten the mix up?

You might want to increase the idle a bit, too many people want to hear each thump. :D.it's supposed to be at around 1000 rpm if memory serves.

Yep,  try upping the idle.

Without a tach, finding 1000 to 1200 is a bit hard.  Maybe you can find a shop to throw a tach on for you .......  or maybe find a school that might do it for you.

Has anyone listenend recently to the sound files for the different  systems..maybee someone  with a bike and tach and compare and find one thats at the correct rpm as a always available auditory guide?

1000 rpm / 60 = 17 rps

2 rev's per exhaust note

~8 putts per second.

A little faster than I can count.   ;D

keep mine at 1100 , 1000 sounds better but stalls out some times,1200 sounds too fast..best to set after long ride when thourghly warmed up..

Where are you stalling?  stock muffler? stock carb?  state of battery charge?  electrical conncetions tight?

Ok,  Below is what I think is slow & fast as best as I can tell from what my bike sounds like with my MMB tach. set to ~1100 rpm

It should be noted that the sound may vary depending on your internet connection speed.  Where I'm at now, we have a super fast connection.   If you have a slow Dial-up connection, find someone with a faster connection or go to your local library and see what they have.

From "YouTube":

Slow:

A little slow (EDIT: 1120 rpm, per fancy software check by Moofed)

A little  slow but close....

Hmmm  may be fast ....  close to 1200 maybe,
Big note here : THIS MUFFLER LOOKS AND SOUNDS ALSO MOST EXACTLY LIKE MY BIKE. Don't know whose bike this is....

Almost right on

Almost right on (EDIT: 1360 rpm, per fancy software check by Moofed, actually a little fast)

A bit fast

Would be good to have someone else double check me out here......

Don't know if they are still available, but before everything went electronic, cheap tach/dwell meters were readily available.

I think I got it.  Turned up the idle pretty high.  I'll take my computer down sometime and record the bike and use Garageband to find out how many thumps per second I'm putting out

Wow, that first bike has quite the blued muffler.  I am a bit jealous.  It either indicates a lot of run time, or a really cheap pipe.

Who'd a thunk it..sounds like you're about right on with the slow and fast..and apparantly about 1100 is the goal.  Thanks for the heads up.

Mine is similar style and is bluing there too.  It's where the muffler deflects the gases into a single wall section.   I think it's bluing because of the singel wall construction.....   :(

ok - without a tach a good way to set the idle on this engine is to watch the head light - it should not dim at idle - get in a dark place and look see - idle it down until it does and raise the idle until it doesn't

I analyzed some of the videos TMack posted using the Audacity sound editor.  The 1000rpm - 1200rpm idle spec translates into 8 1/3 - 10 putts/second.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8z3gFY8NXVY&NR=1 was labeled as "A little slow".  Once the bike has been revved a few times (after the :20 mark) I count 28 putts in 3 seconds, meaning about 1120 rpm.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7bWyQr3fTxU&NR=1 was labeled as "Almost right on" but it is running around 1360 rpm.

My own bike is idling around 1440, so I better go fix that.  :-[

Thanks....  how were the others????

I guess I'm checking to see how bad my memory and hearing is....  ;)

Here's some more.  The software I used for this is free: http://audacity.sourceforge.net/  Just get a recording of the bike, listen for a few seconds of smooth idling, and then zoom in on that part of the sound until you can see the individual putts as the tall lines.  Stick the numbers in (putts ÷ seconds) x 2 x 60.  The more time you count for the more accurate the reading.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Oi4xoFdjdI (the one that sounds like your bike) is actually quite fast at around 1560

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tSfnEqnXT_Y (with the very blued pipe) is obviously too slow, around 900 rpm.  A little tricky to count since it is misfiring sometimes.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1yH1NmQSP6w is about 1360

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9oHIJJtbo1A is 1880  :o

It would be nice if someone with a tach could post a recording along with the tach reading so we can triple check all this.

In my case I got it set to about 1200, but feels like it will stall every time I clutch & let off the throttle.  The revs dip dangerously low for a moment and then bounce back.  I guess I need to do some carb work.

I guess my ears are bad.....   :P

But,  1560 for the bike that sounds like mine.....  Hmmmm ....  wonder if my Nova MMB tach is acturate........   :-?
