Title: How much does a Savage ride like a Sportster?
Post by keithert on 02/11/08 at 12:37:11

I've rented a Sportsters on 3 occasions.  2 1200's and 1 883.  I loved the feel of their engines and the handling of the bikes.  How similiar will the Savage be?  Does the single cylinder feel a lot different than a sportster's v-twin?

I wouldn't know, I have never been on a sportster or any Harley for that matter except just sitting on one in the showroom

They both go and stop and bounce up and down....but one of them vibrates more...

My friend has a '98 sportster 883 and I'm not particularly fond of it. It's a hugger (lowered version but not quite the low version) but it still sits quite abit higher than mine and it vibrates constantly! We will be at a stop light and his mirrors will be visually vibrating. He says the newer ones have better engine mounts to reduce the vibration though. Also, since it's a Harley, you have to pay an extra grand or two for the decals ;D

on the upside the 883 makes a good "chick" bike because of the vibration.  :o

Had a chance to Ride a buncha different Bikes last summer ...

'02 VT750 Spirit
'06 VN900 Vulcan
'06 VS800 Boulevard S50
'07 XL883L Sportster

The Sportster was the closest of any of them to the "character" of the LS650 ... the "no-frills" essence of motorcycling! 8-)

There is a vast difference in about everything from frame geometry; peg/seating position to engine "feel." You really need to ride a Savage and see if it is something you like. I've only ridden a few H-D /  Sportster, and all of them have been very different from each other, not to mention being nothing like a Savage at all. Apples and Oranges. Whether the difference is good or not is a matter of opinion. I very much like the light weight handling; thumper torque, and simplicity of the Savage. And I'm not much of one to fall for peer pressure on having to ride what somebody, or everybody, else likes!

the savage is probably closer in personality, to a sportster, than any other bike available. the forward controls, vibration, and GUTSY gittyup-n-go is very harley like, and quite honestly will out run many a stock HD  ;). often, at first glance, people will mistake it for a sportster too. lancer has one of each now.

I have only been able to ride the sporty once during the ride to bring it home.  I had to order new fork springs for it since someone had chopped the others down to the nub, leaving all of about 1" max of travel.  Made for an interesting ride home and took about 45 min to do so.
The springs arrived and I am waiting for time to do the work.  I picked up a bike lift last week ... still in the car trunk.  I will go to my sons place and do the stuff in his garage.
I also got a jet kit for the stock carb which includes:
- 2 ea of pilot and main jets
- some gaskets
- a new profile needle and needle jet
- and a pilot adjusting screw that has an extra long shaft with a knurled knob on the end so it can be adjusted with the fingers in a flash.
All of that for about $78 ... a very good deal.

After buying the kit I got an email from the seller saying he had gone to my website (such that it is right now) and asked if I wanted to be a distributer for some of his parts.

Anyway, back to the subject at hand.  With just the short ride home I have not had a real chance to get a feel for THIS bike and its personality yet.  The engine is smoother than I had anticipated but I have not run it hard yet either.  The seat is HARD (profiler type) but I have a Corbin solo on the way ($25 on ebay   :D).
It will be at least a week before I get to it.

And one cost twice (or more) the price of the other! :(

Gotta admit, that despite what all I said about the difference between the bikes (and BTW most Sportsters and the Dyna Super come stock with mid-controls, which is one reason I keep looking at them)...

I have to admit that my first sighting of a Savage, not too many years ago, made me do a double-take. I pulled up behind and beside one at a red light and looked at the rear wheel, fender, seat etc... before the engine. It had me thinking "Sportster" until I saw the engine. So there is definitely more than a casual "first glance" resemblance between the Savage and some Sportster models.

the savage will dust it up to 80 and has more leg room and vibrates a lot less and can be had for a whole lot less if your a savy buyer but you will get the evil eye by your HD buds unless you buy the beer.
