Title: Quick ?
Post by eanon on 02/07/08 at 15:44:39

In the CAN'T START thread I noticed T Mack said "set choke, and DO NOT give it any throttle when pushing the starter button."  I too often "blip" the throttle when starting cold.  I know you need to wait for the oil to fully lube the engine before you ride (hence warm-up), but just how bad is it to use a little gas to get her going?

a little blip or so to get it going and smoothed out should be no problem.  hit the starter and rev it way up, problem....

Just think about metal rubbing on metal.  Is it a good thing?

For me the thought actually brings to mind a rather unnerving kind of sound.  Like fingernails on a blackboard.

BTW - the same applies to any engine.  Your car too.

What's the hurry anyway?  Start the bike, let it idle (which it should do without throttle), and put on your helmet.  Then have fun.

I haven't driven the Camaro to work for over three years.
But you can still see where he marked his space.

Too often I give it a blip too.  For how my carb is setup, a bad habit.   Now, when it's warm and I don't need the choke, giving it a blip is no problem.

This bike and my last one (a Honda CM250C) both with the vacuum thingy on top of the carb; both are (were?) "no touchie" when choked.  The Honda actually flooded (wet plugs), don't know on the Suzuki (plug is soooo easy to get to.).  But, my son's Honda SL70, my Rupp Roadster (minibike, hey a guy toy.... ), the Honda CL 175 I had for a bit, all needed a tweak of the throttle.  SO, I find myself over and over again thinking  " #%@&^%@!   what did I do now" unitl I realize what I've done.    DUH...        I will say that I'm catching myself earlier.  It's sort of like the old timerwith the habit of pumping the gas pedal of a modern car.

As for the oil replies,  I've got an oil pressure gauge.......it's scary watching how long it takes to get oil to move the needle.....

Yeah.  How much is the oil pressure?  Something like 7 PSI @ XXXX RPMs?

Little Briggs & Straton engines have more than that and they don't even have an oil pump...

I could wish my BP was that low :P

7-10 PSIG at 3K rpm,   But..... idle is ~1100 -1200 rpm, so on a warm day with 10W-40 dino oil and a warmed up engine, it's around 2 to 4 psig...........Yes.... 2 psig .......

Haven't got the guts to take the idle down to the < 1K that some do for the cool thumping sound.  Already replaced the head for bad journal that the PO some how did.  Also up-graded to Syn MC oil 20w-50.

I sure do wish the Savage engine design was just a little bit like this '82 Honda CB450 that I'm parting out.

You can get to the oil pump right under the right side case, and it's chain driven off the primary gear (photos soon to be on eBay)...
