Title: Sitting three years - To start or not to start
Post by FrankieB on 02/01/08 at 19:12:16

I just purchased another ls650 (found on the forum here) and it's been sitting for about 3 years in the guys shop. Seller stated the bike ran fine before being stored.

I'm about to do the following before I try and turn it over:

1. Empty Gas Tank
2. Put new gas in
3. Take off carb and clean with carb cleaner
4. Put in a new battery

Any other suggestions? I thought I remember someone telling me once to put something in the cyclinder, not sure. I would also like to change the oil but from what I read you should let the bike run for a bit before changing the oil. Could also change the spark plug I guess. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

definitely oil right away.
maybe sparkplug,
drain carb check bowl.
check tires.

I've bought bikes that have been sitting for much longer than that. First change the oil. Take out the sparkplug and put a teaspoon or two of motor oil in the cylinder. Cranking it over with the sparkplug out will help to preoil the engine.

The major obstacles you will encounter will be from varnished gasoline in the fuel system (carb and fuel tank).

Pull the plug and pour a little oil in the sparkplug hole to help lubricate the rings before cranking the engine over. I would throw a shop towel over the head to stop any oil blowing back out of the plug hole. The oil might foul the plug so buy two and expect to use both.  Beside that fresh gas in the tank, drain the carb bowl twice and an oil change should do it up right.

Put a little seafoam in the carb bowl it will clean the carb and lube it

Thanks for the replies guys, I'm definatley gonna do it all. So I don't have to run the bike before changing the oil?

No. Change the oil before running it. Getting oil warm helps it drain but is not 100% necessary.

Wouldn't hurt to take off one of the valve covers pour in a cup of oil too.

Turn the engine over for about 30 seconds with the plug removed.  That'll get oil pumped up to the top end and throughout the transmission.

the only thing I would suggest different is marvel mystery oil in the cylinder insted of plain motor oil, other than that all the above suggestions sound good.

Okay.  It's been 3 days.  Done any of that yet?
