Title: Re-chromed foot controls Post by KwakNut on 01/30/08 at 10:52:21 I was just going to rebuild this bike to be mechanically sound but stay looking a bit of a dog, then I found these cheap on eBay. Just been triple chromed. darn - I'm going to have to do the while bike now. http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e367/5000SE/Chromedforwardcontrols2.jpg |

Title: Re: Re-chromed foot controls Post by Holodeck on 01/30/08 at 20:52:22 Don't do it, you will be in over your head in no time. Better you just sell them to me. Don't thank me, I'm here to help. ;) ;) |

I'm going to fabricate some extensions for the forward controls to shift them forward by a few inches, but not until I have some of the other bits back on the bike assembled. |

Maybe I'll polish the barrel and head exterior and fins at a later date when the cylinder coating eventually starts looking poor - for now it's fairly tidy. |
Title: Re: Re-chromed foot controls Post by Don Steel on 02/13/08 at 05:06:24 Kwaknut. I'm doing something similar with mine. Polished casings, etc. Just deciding what colour to do the barrel, black or silver!? Mine is in pretty grotty order, so will need to be either! I wouldn't minded of doing my paintwork Matt black, however have just done it Ford Imperial Blue with ghost flames on in silver. I'll post some pics sometime. The trouble is, she's taking so long to build back up, I quite fancy the matt black colour which has become popular! ::) |

Compare these two shots. Admittedly the silver-barrelled one has had some well-balanced work done and looks better anyway, but the overall effect of the barrel is much cleaner and, for me, looks ten times better. I think that the aluminium finish makes the barrel look bigger too - maybe that's just a macho thing wanting the thumper to look like it's a bigger motor, but I think it's a nice aspect of the look of the bike. Down to personal preference though, some owners will much prefer a black barrel!! http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e367/5000SE/ls650a.jpg http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e367/5000SE/loweredLS.jpg |

Title: Re: Re-chromed foot controls Post by Don Steel on 02/14/08 at 04:44:23 Yeah Kwaknut, the comparison is good! The first one makes it look like a Honda CG125 engine or similar! The lump in the second one looks great! 8-) I am probably going with the Silver. PJ1 do a silver engine spray that I had my eye on! Unfortunately progress on my rebuild is very slow, I'm hoping to get my finger out this year and crack on with it! When do you predict yours to be up and running? |
Title: Re: Re-chromed foot controls Post by KwakNut on 02/14/08 at 05:57:47 I'm not rushing things, and want to get it right - I'm struggling to find a few bits I want and need to work out a mod on the shocks to lower the back end and make a shorter rear grab rail, but once my cam and camchain arrive from Lancer, I should be putting most of it together. I also intend to build some extensions for the forward controls and get those chromed, along with re-chroming a few other pitted bits like the bar risers, yokes and footpeg stubs. Different bars mirrors, indicators (maybe), perhaps a rebuild of the front wheel. I'll be touching up the frame paint in situ, but need to remove the swing arm to strip and repaint that properly. I'll be using smooth silver hammerite on my engine, but on the fins I think you're right to use the PJ1 stuff. It all adds up to quite a few hours' work in total, and I work away during the week so it'll be a couple of months I think. |
