Title: Poor Man's Lift Table?
Post by Bear_Rider on 12/24/07 at 12:42:50

I have two bad knees and a ruptured disk. I'd like to be able to raise the entire bike up to a more comfortable height. Does anyone have a source for a reasonable table or for plans?

Harbor Fright has two different 1000 pound motorcycle lifts.

One foot operated one for $300
http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=91764

And an air operated one for $380
http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=94121

Those are both the table style lifts. They have a 1200 pound lift also but that is way overkill for our savages.

Just had Another thought, if you have a flatbed trailer (borrow a friends or rent one) that might help raise it up a bit. At least it might help if your working near the top of the bike.

Years ago I bought plans for a raising cycle lift table that uses a car floor jack for the hydraulics part. Try <plans@afabonline.com> If he is out of business I may be interested in selling my set of plans. I have both the $300 Harbor Freight one and a Handy air/with ATV side boards. Both are good and usefull units.  The HF one has a drop out panel for the rear tire which is really nice, but an almost useless front tire clamp as compared to the Handy. Handy used to be the industry stand in shops and now comes with the slide/drop out panel. i bought the Handy when it was about the only one around. From the pictures it looks like it is sold by others now with their name on it.

Poor man's Bike lift... dig a hole, put a board accross or park next to it.

Fully customisable, can be multi level.

Haven't checked out the site or plans yet, but here is a click-able link to the site Max mentions above:

I'm going to check their stuff out. Might be worth the time/trouble or not.

I can tell that because of your age, that you really don't understand.

See...If a guy has bad knees and/or a ruptured disk, then it is even more difficult to dig a hole and crawl in and out of it.  That won't work...

As an engineer, we need you to come up with a better design. http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b277/gmdinusa/action-smiley-022.gif

He was asking for a poor man's lift table, and what's cheaper than a hole?

OK, I guess I left out a step, which I felt anybody with a ruptured disk would already know.

How to dig a hole with a ruptured disk.
Go to store, buy 2 cases of beer.
Gather up the appropriate digging tools (picks, shovels, tnt, whatever)
When ever friends or kids come over, put a cooler over by the proposed hole and start digging.
They'll say what the hell are you doing? you explain, they'll retort you shouldn't be doing that and pitch in.
Maybe they'll say this is too much f'in work and huddle up together and buy you the lift table for you.   ;D

Or course a couple of come alongs strung up to the rafters will work too.    ;D

And that is the truth, ahem. :P

I knew that you could do it.  That's much better.  I'm glad that you included the come alongs.  He can use those to get in and out of the hole.

By the way brother just blew out his disk, had the sergery a couple of weeks ago.  And is now down here from Seattle area kicking the nuts with us.  My own bad knee and back keep me from prolonged physical activities, but I still do the bending and the knelling while I can.  Just pay for it later.   ;D

Do they have Walnut trees in other galaxies?Maybe make the lift out of Walnut instead of steel.

Very good job there.  I like it.  Any chance you'll be in the neighborhood soon?

I certainly hope so.  Yes, and don't forget the glue.

Cool I like apples, pears, etc. But they are too soft to make a bike stand out of.Must be Walnut.

Yep, I know your username...how much for a lift like yours?  (Bet that shipping would be a little prohibitive)

Good job.  Much better than the store bought one, that I sold.

Good job.

Nice mod on using the boat winch.  I take it you couldn't find the hardware to make it work like the original.

Hard to find hardware can be had from McMaster-Carr.   ;D

Title: Re: Poor Man's Lift Table?
Post by fsmidt on 12/30/07 at 12:59:50

i used 2 trapezium tread 12mm (don`t know it is proper english) and a nut but is has to be perfect in line ,otherwise it eat eachother.

after 2 trials i decided to use a as you call a boat winch and works perfect.

on the last 2 pics you can see them, i didn`t remove them at that time.

but in the future i will just use a winch,it is cheaper also ;D
i i`m dutch (ons ben zuinig)

I would love to have one of those lifts, but it is a little beyond my tech skills and tool availability at the moment.

Title: Re: Poor Man's Lift Table?
Post by fsmidt on 12/30/07 at 13:20:12

it can be made of wood if you want(no joke)

i bet someone on this forum will try to make a poor man lift with this concept.

just a matter of time  :)

my work is in metal, for me this was the easyway.

We have what's called an ACME thread that works really well with this type of project.  Once used it to construct a lift table for 4'x12' panels that weighed close to 800 lbs. each.

Done right, this could be a bolt together project.

Title: Re: Poor Man's Lift Table?
Post by YonuhAdisi on 12/30/07 at 13:32:45

I'll have to think on that for a bit. But if it really can be made out of wood, I just may give it a shot. I'm tired of string tie downs from the rafters to hold the FireLizard upright by the handlebars.

Title: Re: Poor Man's Lift Table?
Post by Bear_Rider on 12/31/07 at 16:04:47

verslagen,

I do believe that you're right about this being primarily a bolt together project. If you reject the idea that the lift column has to slant, it becomes even more straightforward.

Another thought just slithered into my mind. Why not put a socket in the floor and thus eliminate the legs? That would simplify the construction, and eliminate all those obstructions to your blind and trusting feet.  ;D

Title: Re: Poor Man's Lift Table?
Post by verslagen1 on 12/31/07 at 20:57:35

Bear that's a good idea.  I have a rather useless pole sticking out of the sidewalk in my sideyard (haven't a clue what the PO was thinking).

Would be rather easy to make over sized carriage for it, bolt on a boat winch about shoulder height, make a shelf for the bike to sit on and I'm done with stubbing my toes.

Now personnally, I'd like it heavy duty enough to pick a tank or maybe even a hardly ridden.  So some 1/4" plate for the carriage.  5/8" bolts for axles.  You could use 4x4's for the shelf, but I may use 1x3 steel tube like what's shown.

BTW, dad bought himself a cheap electric winch from harbor fright.  About $40, and it did real nice work pulling up a truck bed onto a trailer with my tired old mc battery.  But I may stick to hand crank for ease of control.   ;D

Title: Re: Poor Man's Lift Table?
Post by Rockin_John on 12/31/07 at 23:29:00

I have my own personal reasons for appreciating this sample of ingenuity. I'd already been thinking about a poor man's "Joey" lift for the back of my SUV, and basing it on a cheap boat trailer winch instead of more expensive electric or hydraulic lifts.

My hitch is rated at over 500# tongue weight, and should be stout enough to hold the Savage. I'll probably beef it up some anyways though. But I didn't want to try to ramp the bike up there like the dirt bike guys do.

With a bit of modification I could make something similar to this design which would lift a piece of channel steel, and some tie downs long enough to hold the Savage hanging right off the back of the old GMC!

Winch it down, unhook the straps, and ride away!

Strap the bike down, winch it up, and drive away!  :D 8-)

One thought to all the designers going after this one.  Consider adding a safety pin some where so when the winch/cable etc decides to cut loose the whole thing only drops 1/4" rather than 3 feet.

Otherwise I like it.

Based on the post in the ground concept...your kids really didn't need that basketball hoop anyway did they??   ;)
