I am currently building my own forward controls out of some 1/4 inch diamond plate steel.

There is a thread in the tech/ref section of this site posted by NightRain who built his own forward controls. (in fact that is the method I'm using except for a few alterations of my own.

But so far to build your own seems to be fairly straight forward (no pun intended).

I didn't make them. Ed_L did, but they went on easily and work fine.
Aluminum plate.

love the look of the bike.  well except for the reflector loose it and use the mounting holes for a new  high db chrome horn 13 bucks at shucks. much more effective than the reflector.

The hardest part is making a longer shift rod. I ended up cutting the threaded ends off a stock rod and brazed them into a length of thicker round stock. Gotta remember that one end of the shifter rod has reversed threads on it and you will need to make something so you can still use the backward threads.

I was gonna try to find a die that will cut reverse threads and make a longer shift rod for the FireLizard. Anyone know who might actually carry such a thing?

Can you post a pic of the other side Clueless? I would like to see the shifter side.

Post by Ed L. on 12/24/07 at 17:24:43

i never found anywhere that had the reverse thread dies to cut the threads with which was too bad cause it would be nice to have a set out in the shop for custom work. I have a metal lathe but really don't know how to set the old girl up to do that type of work. That's why I ended up drilling and brazing the tips in the ends of a thicker rod. The thicker rod also won't bend as easy as the cheap thin stock rods. If you need a custom shifter rod made let me know, I'll bang one out for you for a lot cheaper than a die.
Merry Christmas to all ;D

Title: Re: forward controls
Post by YonuhAdisi on 12/24/07 at 17:57:58

I hope I have better luck finding a reverse thread die. I find it more appealing to be able to just make me a longer shifter rod myself in twenty minutes or less than having to wait for one to be shipped to me.

Yup, that's my feeling about it also. Luck and let me know if you need any tips.

Just need some welding done and my home made forward controls will be finished. Unfortunately I don't have a welder and don't know how to use one if I did have one. But fortunately I have a buddy who does have access to a welder and is willing to do the welding for me.

I promise I will get some pics of the forward controls posted as soon as I possibly can.

Actually I need to figure out a longer shift rod and figure something out for the brake as well. I think I got it figured out, I just need a couple of pieces of hardware first, oh, and a die, a regular thread die, don't need the reverse thread die with the method I'm thinking of.

Taking my forward controls in to work with me to give to my buddy so he can do the welding, when I get them back I will try to post some pics of them.

Try this site for reverse (left handed) dies.   http://www.mcmaster.com/   Found it on another website.  Good Luck!

Thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you!!!

They are a little pricey, but just what I have been looking for. Too bad they don't have a full set in metric, but at least I can get individual dies in metric.

Okay, now, does anyone know the thread size of the shifter rod?

Title: Re: forward controls
Post by Ed L. on 01/05/08 at 06:58:36

I think it is a M6x1.5, try matching it up to one of the bolts that holds the seat on. The seat bolts are M6x1.5 so if they match you got the correct thread size.

I'll try that, thanks, Ed L

I might be able to produce a bunch of the forward control plates out of 1/4 inch aluminium. They would come with longer shifter rods and brake linkage and a bracket for the brake cable. The design is the same as the three I offered about a year ago except they will be made out of 1/4 inch instead of 1/2 inch aluminium. Just wondering how many would be interested?. I am hoping to keep the price around $80.00 plus shipping.
Thanks.

Ed L, do you really think 1/4 inch aluminum is strong enough? I first tried with aluminum and they seemed a bit flimsy to me. (Not trying to burst any bubbles here, just thought I would mention it is all.)

Title: Re: forward controls
Post by Ed L. on 01/07/08 at 16:00:40

The last sets I made were out of 1/2 inch aluminium and were plenty strong enough. I was planning to pull some 1/4 inch out of my scrap pile and jump up and down on it just to see how much flex and abuse it can take. If it is too weak then maybe I'll try some steel. I still have a large piece of 1/2 inch left but the extra thickness is a problem. I might be able to get my hands on a plasma cutter for a day or two which would be sweet for steel plates so that is my backup plan at the moment. It will take a few weeks to sort out so everybody please be patient. I'll plan a run of around five sets.  ;D

OK, I need to set my shop up for metal working, give me a week or so and I should be turning them out. If I don't get back to everybody right away don't worry, I've a lot going on this month. Just checked the thread size on the shifter rod and it is M6x1.0 not M6x1.5, oops.

Thanks Ed, I now can get the die I need. (Would be a good idea for you as well since you will be making controls to sell.) http://www.mcmaster.com/

This is where I found it thanks to eanon for providing the link.

Still waiting for my friend to complete the welding, he's had food poisoning.

Well, my friend will be bringing the forward controls to work with him tomorrow. (finally got over his bout of food poisoning).

I will definitely provide pics of them as well but they won't be put on the bike until I get my engine repaired, which shouldn't be too much longer.

Just finished pricing the aluminium for the forward control plates. I can get 1/4 inch for $22.00 a square foot from a local vendor which is enough to make one set. He sells the plate by the foot along a four foot sheet so I will need to purcase either four square feet or eight square feet. Looks like I will start with four sets and roll the money over to finance the next batch. Next I need to cut a set out and bolt it on my '02 to make sure the 1/4 inch is strong enough. I've already geared down my band saw and have found a blade that does a good job of cutting aluminium. I'll keep everybody updated  ;D

Title: Re: forward controls
Post by Ed L. on 01/13/08 at 10:28:41

Here's what I've got so far, the pencil is there to provide some scale for the picture. Next step is to bolt them up to my '02 and make sure that they fit.

Title: Re: forward controls
Post by Ed L. on 01/13/08 at 12:39:57

Just got in from the shop and here is what they look like on the bike. I reused the longer hardware from my orignial set which is why the bolts are sticking so far out. Can't get out to test ride them today, got a bit of a rain storm blowing thru. When I jump up and down on the foot pegs I noticed a little flex, maybe a 1/16 of an inch occuring at the end of them, beside that I'm very happy with the project.

Title: Re: forward controls
Post by Ed L. on 01/15/08 at 11:13:36

Got a test ride in today, the weather was a balmy 50 degrees here on Florida's east coast ;D. I had no problems with the forward control setup so I took the plunge and ordered a standard and a reverse die for the shifter rod and picked up enough 1/4 inch aluminium plate to make eight sets. Looks like the cost will be $80.00 a set plus shipping. A set will include the right and left side plate which are drilled and cut to fit a Savage, a bracket to relocate the brake and brake light cable, a longer shifter rod and a welded "Y" extension for the brake petal made out of 1/8x3/4 flat stock . The edges of the plates will be smoothed by a belt sander but nothing will be polished. I will also include a list of hardware needed for the assembly along with some instructions and a CD with some pictures. It should be a rather easy bolt-on modification that won't need any changes to the bike except for the removal of the kickstand safety switch. I already have seven or eight riders interested so I'll P.M. everybody when done with this batch with first dibs first. I plan to do a second batch as soon as some cash comes in (aluminium is expensive) so don't worry if you miss this first go round.

The dies and metal cutting blades for the bandsaw just came in today. I have already sliced the big piece of plate aluminium up into bite sized pieces so I can handle it better. Now I need to pull the new plates off the bike so I can use them as templates for this batch and get cutting. I'll let everybody know how it is going.
