Title: "Bobber" DIY?
Post by Dave48 on 12/13/07 at 12:41:06

Can anyone point me to an idiot's guide to customising/chopping/bobbing? Nothing extreme, just want to tidy up the back end: single seat, smooth short rear fender, neater rear light....that sort of thing. Would a rear fender like this

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=300181501850&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=020

be a starting point?

Any and all advice gratefully received! If there was a chop shop near me I'd probably just describe and pay, but thin on the ground round here as far as I can tell.

Thanks!

verslagen's idea is great, but true thats all you need. that fender will work but it will take a lot of work, I dont know if you have seen my bike recently but that is the best way IMO the easiest way to mount it.  B/c it can be really tricky to line the fender up an make mounting holes/brackets. Good Luck anyway.

Jirehcycles.com has a 2" thick catalog you can get for free -- I will likely be getting a springer seat from them for Christmas.  They have a catseye taillight that'll replace the license plate light and looks rather neat.  Even the wife agreed on that!  Lose the pillion pad, relocate the electronics into the airbox, do a bondo job on the holes.....

You can spend a few weeks digging through all of the older messages but I think it would be worth it.

bobbin a bike is a personal thing not something you can go out and buy.

That fender would look good on the bike. What do you have to lose,if you don't like it you can always put the stock one back on.I am thinking about changing mine,I'm going to try and use the stock mounting holes in the frame and space the fender to the tire, but I will put struts or a sissy bar on.Jammer cycle products makes a cool metalflake solo seat and matching p-pad. 8-)GO FOR IT.

using the existing holes is what i did, i can post a pic of how i mounted a strutless fender.

Nice!! Actually my first thought - the children always look nervous when in response to "...can you fix this, Dad?" I say "fetch me the hacksaw and the BIG hammer".

Very few off the shelf parts for the Savage in UK - and the chop scene in general not as extensive as in USofA.

I suppose I could do it in stages - just lose the chrome side bars, sissy bar and rear seat? Relocate the electrical gubbins and fit a rack? Sort of look like this (don't know if link will work!):

Thanks for sign-posts.

"My.  That sort of looks familiar"

I assume that I'm copying! Sorry, but then imitation is the sincerest form of flattery!

Rear chrome bits all off. I continue to be amazed at how easily even exposed nuts/bolts come undone on a 18 YO bike - either whenever anything has been dismantled in past threads have been given a coat of copper grease or it really has never been out in the wet!

Now to figure out a way to mount the flashers direct to the fender.....

I don't care if your idea is similar...they'd never be the same anyway :P

You haven't seen my scoot?  I've had the fender like that for a couple years with the signals in the fender rail holes.  But recently, I started mounting a rack, changed the license plate mount, and moved the signals again.

Besides, it's really not as much a copying or a flattering thing...it's just a cool idea ;D

LOL.  A man's gotta do what a man's gotta do...

You should have seen me using our Dodge truck so that I could put a nice slow radius in a piece of 1/2" square steel stock.  My spouse thought I was nuts, but it worked :P

"with the signals in the fender rail holes."

A clue as to HOW would be good! I'd like to keep the stock ones, but the only neat method that comes to mind is to thread the mounting studs and bolt up from inside - and I don't have a die set. Otherwise I'll have to buy new front and rear - got to match, obviously!

A certain charm about Vroom's job, but I wouldn't get more than half a mile before being busted and given a good "thumpin'"!  "Failing to comply with Construction and Use Regs? Should know better at YOUR age grandad. In the car..."

I have new signals for the rear...haven't found front ones that I like yet.

Want a hint?  They are ALL over this forum :P
