I'd sort of noticed that the Savage's engine gets very, well, HOT! And takes what seems like a long time to cool (at least compared with the Virago). And when after only 2 miles on a coldish day I arrived at local workshop yesterday the guy said "that smells hot for such a short trip!"

Any thoughts as as to how do I tell if it is TOO hot? And if it is, what might be the cause(s)?

Longest trip it's done to date is only c.40 miles, but I haven't noticed any fall off in power or other symptoms  at that distance.

Thanks for any advice.

Other than buying a cylinder head temp gauge, which I think is a very good thing to have, just watch to be sure the oil is fresh and always up to the mark.

whats the operating temp range of the head ?
oil is 140 F

Sometimes the word HOT is subjective, and the guy at the "workshop" made a silly comment.  What does HOT mean for an air cooled Thumper on a cold day?

If the mixture is correct and the engine runs good then just forget about it.  It's okay.

I am not sure where I got this idea but for some reason it seems to me that the head temp is about 350......ok, the info page I linked to mentions 350 degrees.  That is on a Rotax air cooled engine so it would seem that  the temp would be in the same ball park.

I did mention it a few months ago when I bought one of the gauge & sensor sets for my project bike.

The pipe also gets hot (well, duh)  :D

I wondered how my favorite jeans got a hole in them until I realized I had been burning them the way I was standing when filling the gas tank.  I darn near burned a hole in my new ones too.

I think the owner manual should recommend refueling from the left side not right. Max

Yep.  I learned about muffler burns a long time ago, and I still manage to get a new one every year.  Just can't seem to stay away from the engine until it cools :P

That pipe gets hot, and it's fun listening to the "crackle and pop" from the contracting metal as it is cooling down too.

Yes, my daughter was wondering about that noise after I pulled in one day.  I explained it was the metal cooling, etc.  It's one of those "motorcycle sounds" that the uninitiated can't understand.
