Hey guys I'm looking to buy a Savage I found lots of nice bikes the best one is an 87 4 speed. How will this compare to my old KZ440? I weigh 210 will it cruise all right on the Wisconsin freeways at 65? Would I be better off to find a 5 speed because of my weight. I love the looks of the Savage and I love to work on my own bike so I really want one. This 87 I'm looking at is sweet it's near mint with low miles. It's way too cold and snowy right now for anything more than a jaunt around the block. After checking out lots of bike forums you guys seemed the most informed so I hope you can help. I weigh about 230 in riding gear and I go up and down the LA freeways at 65mph to 85 mph every day about 35 miles each way. I suggest if its not been done to put on a better muffler than stock adjust the idle mixture screw and put in a better airfilter and your set to go. Mones an '87 4 speed as well

Thanks Steve, I know this is the right bike for me the one problem is getting it from 50 miles away to my house we are having a snowstorm right now expecting 6" tonight. I have been looking at a lot of different bikes all year and just love the simple mechanics of the Savage all bikes should be this way. I looked at the Royal Enfield Bullet and did consider it until I found some reviews from angry consumers. Also no used bullets available in my area but lots of Savages and S-40's. My wife and I have been driving Suzuki SUV's for 10 years now with no problem so I trust the brand. My best Bud has an intruder with 139,000 and no mechanical problems yet even still has the original clutch but they look tough to work on and I have big hands so I ruled it out. Thanks again!

Welcome geeze, you won't be disapointed with the Savage.

As Steve said, the bike will do 65 stock no problem. I've got a 95 with a 5 speed but there is not much diff in the 4th and 5th gears between them and had no problem traveling on the freeway with it. Others have run hours on long trips at 65 and 70 either stock or with the changes Steve recommended. Usually it will be your backside that gives out before the bike. There's a few recommended changes in the tech section to help with that. Then, once your comfortable with it, do the chain conversion (only $100 for parts) and watch her run even better at highway speeds.

You will find the Savage to be a good riding bike. I am 58 and weigh in at just above 200. I have modified the engine a bit for more power/torque and the suspension for better handling and the seat for more comfort...just to make it fit me better.

It is FUN to ride, and that is the main thing to me.

It really will not make any difference between the 4 or 5 spd, the top gear is essentially the same with either tranny and the engine has more than enough torque so that the 4 spd will work every bit as good as the 5 spd.

Very cool, Thanks for the help now I need to figure how to get the bike home I have put some in my van before but had to loosen handlebars etc. One of my good Buds has a trailer and owes me a favor I think i'll give him a calll!
