Title: Alternative Coils?
Post by lostmcgoon on 11/29/07 at 08:22:53

is there anyone out there running an automotive coil on a savage? I am going to have to relocate my coil when I finish the frame work and am looking for alternatives with longer plug wires.

I imagine that if the primary and secondary resistance measures the same as stock, then you'd have no problem.

The wire unscrews from the Savage coil?  Never checked that and just thought it was molded one-piece.  Hmmm.  A longer wire might be nice.

The windings normally measure around 5 ohms, plus a 5 ohm cap.

It wasn't too long ago that I was fixing a XL250 that had no spark.  To my surprise, both the spark plug and cap measured totally OPEN.  I had never seen that before.

The bike also had a dead CDI unit, but the coil was still good.

I didn't think the wire unscrewed either...

Some bike do ,....some don't.

The microfische doesn't show separate coil & wire so I would agree with Greg & Vroom1776.    I wouldn't try it unless you're 100% sure you can't use existing coil or if you're rich and ready to buy a new one.

Trust me from experience,  I was told by a friend my son's Honda SL-70's wire unscrewed.  Well,  snap it went.....yes,  I still talk to him....

I still haven't remembered to look closer at the coil...but of course the idea of "chipping away" does have a sense of finality to it :P

Try this link to J&P Cycles for coils...

I don't know about the Savage, but years ago, I put automotive coils on my Yamaha XS750D.

That bike had three coils.  With the automotive coils installed, the charging system was working harder than it did with the stock coils installed.  I could tell because my system voltage was lower.

Something to think about if you are considering this mod.
