Title: How to idle?
Post by DocNeedles on 11/27/07 at 13:07:19

So I got my Savage running (see Cafe), but it is idling quite high.  I attempted to turn the screw on the new carburetor and did turn it a bit but did not notice any change in idle.  Which is the idle screw is it on the left or right hand side, and how much should I turn it?  I guess until I hear the idle calming down.  It still backfires when I turned it off but with much more authority.  I will have to work on that.
Thanks for all your advice and help with this.

Try not to have it more than 3 turns out.

That's where the friction of the o-ring becomes marginal and the screw can fall out while riding.

Are we talking about a stock BS40 carb?

No. It is Lancer's Mikuni upgrade.

Make sure you have 1/8" of play in the throttle cable or if it is too tight the slide (and idle) will be limited by the cable and it won't matter what you do with the idle screw.  The idle screw on a VM is nothing more than a bullet nose screw that rides against a ramp on the side/bottom of the slide.  it raises and lowers the slide based on how far in it is and where it hits the slide.  However, the throttle cable is also attached directly to the slide and if you do not have free play in it, it will hold the slide open.  If you need to adjust check the brass adjustment collar on the top of the carb.

another thing with the free play in the cable...

the cable mounting can become caught on top of where it enters the carb, keeping the throttle open at all times.  makes a nice cruise control, though

So this is the problem I am having.  I can only start and run my bike on prime, when I switch to regular setting it eventually cuts out and the motor stops.  The idle mixture screw seems to have no effect.  When I adjust it to a point where the screw is turning by itself there is no dropping in idle.  The motor is running very hot and the new muffler has changed to an amber colour and I have only run it for a few minutes while I tried to adjust the idle.  When it cuts out it has a very loud backfire.
I have not looked at my throttle linkage as yet.
Further diagnostic suggestions appreciated.

sounds like it's very lean.
