Title: Horsepower
Post by donhere on 11/09/07 at 12:46:09

Does anyone know what the horsepower on a savage is?

No.  Heard a lot of numbers all around 30, though :P

bikez.biz posts hp ratings for most years and makes of motorcycle.  I can't vouch for their info, but depending on the specific year, the numbers range from 29-31 hp.

Peak horsepower is a very incomplete measure of a motorcycle's usable performance.  For general usage, a motorcycle with a wider less peaky horsepower curve is better than one with a narrow if higher curve.  A nice fat and flat torque curve means you can twist and go no matter what gear you happen to be in.   Ergonomics and gearing are as important, if not more important, that horsepower.  If you and the bike do not mesh all the power in the world is useless.

My answer was different?

:P

If I had to guess, I'd have known you'd say something like this.  Thanks for not letting me down :P

Isn't there a chart in the Tech section?

Plenty to get you in deep kaka. ;D

I dunno about the tech section, but I have a few on my web site for comparison:

http://catoosatrading.com/images/cycles/savage_dyno/

I find the comparison to the 883 Sportster particularly interesting, considering the weight of each bike. Also, there's one there for a Buell Blast putting out over 50HP!

If they can, we can... I think. Note that even the modified 883 doesn't make quite 50HP. There may already be someone there, but I want to see a dyno chart and modification list of a Savage pushing 50HP !!!

Deep kaka!

All this obsession w/ HP and top end......to me, it`s all about the torque and weight.

Hey, uh, 29-30? I am guessing that doing some of those carb mods should boost the HP some , no?

For which I've been extremely grateful a couple of times.

Interesting.

The curves are different too.  The Savage seems to reach a peak before redline.  The others seem to build all the way to the max.

Yup, might as well short-shift on a Savage; because wringing it all the way out isn't going to gain you anything.

And that's where I think the "hidden HP" lies; is in getting the motor to breath well enough to "run out the back door" as they say.

I know that Lancer bases his Cam and Kits to play on the Savage's existing strong points in the low and middle RPM torque range; and that's as it should be for best street performance; but I don't think the engine will ever reach its full potential until it can pull all the way up to redline.

Yes, and true of any engine since:

HP = torque*RPMs/5252

Note:  the torque above is at the rpm you input in the equation, not max torque...

Another note:  so obviously the HP will be at the same rpms...

Hey, a little more cam will take care of that.

A cam might. Mine now just about pulls red line in 5th with stock gearing with the below mods. Love it, but at those RPM it's gonna have limited life since mean average piston speeds reach 4000 ft/min. That's average, hate to think how fast that slug is going at mid-cylinder. (It's fastest speed). Anyway I think if you keep it under 80mph it should have a good life. :D

I'd never thought about "mid cylinder" speed, or the crankshaft position that is halfway between TDC and BDC before.  Hmmm:P
