Title: New fork oil thread Post by barry68v10 on 11/04/07 at 11:30:32 After having read several threads on changing fork seals, it seems the easiest way anyone has discussed about simply changing fluid is as follows: Pick up front of bike Remove front wheel Loosen/remove fork oil drain hex heads Replace fork oil drain plugs Remove top of fork cap Refill fluid Replace fork cap Replace wheel Put front of bike down Is this the "preferred method"? Can anyone confirm or deny? |

Title: Re: New fork oil thread Post by barry68v10 on 11/04/07 at 17:29:31 Hmmm...thanks Jim. Good point about the axle and spacers, but I don't think they're all that hard to R&R. The "bubba" wrench could consume a little more time though. I plan on doing mine next weekend, so I guess I'll flip a coin to pick the method ;D On the other hand, I'm definitely NOT a fan of leaving my ride incapacitated overnight...hmmm |

Title: Re: New fork oil thread Post by verslagen1 on 11/06/07 at 07:47:13 Tie rope to front wheel Throw rope over rafter Pick up front of bike up until vertical Remove top of fork cap drain fluid lower bike Refill fluid Replace fork cap ;D |
Title: Re: New fork oil thread Post by Savage_Greg on 11/06/07 at 09:22:38 As always, the engineer has to reinvent the wheel :P |
Title: Re: New fork oil thread Post by verslagen1 on 11/06/07 at 09:36:32 Actually, it's your idea. You said flip it over like a pedal pusher. But that would drain all the fluids. Get her vertical and only the forks will drain. Thanks for the inspiration! ;D |

Dang, I don't have exposed rafters in my garage. But, I could tie it to the garage door and use the opener to lift it for me! |

With the "GREG METHOD" is it necessary to remove and replace the front wheel? How does that help? |
Title: Re: New fork oil thread Post by verslagen1 on 11/06/07 at 13:32:51 In the event that you don't have exposed rafter... any available tree of properly sized limb may due. Of course you may get some comments from your neighbors... 'teaching that dog a new trick?' 'bad dog?' ;D |

Let me ask this, where are the "fork oil drain plugs"? |
Title: Re: New fork oil thread Post by govmule84 on 11/06/07 at 14:41:12 Greg... Why does your fork oil method contain so few beers consumed? My bike's rider easily holds up to four quarts, that's the '84 model. Is yours different? |

On a 'cheekier' note, let me retort with, "which fork oil drain plugs, the one's at the top or bottom?" |

Oh, one of the newer models I see. The older models, which my bike's rider is a part of, is after-market equipped with a much larger tank and, provided that the drain plug is properly cleared and working, has no limit on the number of quarts that can be added as the need arises. |

The newer models tend to have "6-pack" the after-market older models usually have "pony kegs or kegs" ;) |

I suppose that I should have inserted "as needed to completely drain forks". My mistake :P |

Neither. Technically speaking, there are no fork oil drain plugs on the LS650. |

What are the 8mm (?) hex heads on the bottom (fat part) of the fork called? |
Title: Re: New fork oil thread Post by barry68v10 on 11/08/07 at 02:09:22 Oops, I meant 8mm allen heads ::) |

Technically speaking, they are called the Damper Rod Securing Bolt, in the manual...you do have a manual, right? That is essentially what holds your fork together. BTW - Most older bikes actually had a small screw for draining the fork oil. Some new ones like BMW still do. To get to these 8 MM hex wrench allen head bolts, you still have to remove the wheel too. They are above the axle bolt in the bottom... To do it right, I would still buy a 6 pack and remove the forks ;D |
Title: Re: New fork oil thread Post by barry68v10 on 11/08/07 at 17:21:05 Ok, I too relent! Pulling the forks tonight :P Gotta run out and buy an 8mm allen wrench first... |
Title: Re: New fork oil thread Post by verslagen1 on 11/08/07 at 18:40:54 I'll drop the forks too, cause I don't want to find out if oil will pour out the speedo cable. ;D |
Title: Re: New fork oil thread Post by barry68v10 on 11/08/07 at 20:54:21 Ok, done. Give road test soon. Gotta say though, I'm not a huge fan of how the right side front axel contacts the right side fork. :-/ The left (side with brake) has a nice solid contact point. Can anyone explain this phenomenom? |

Sure. Common "phenomenon". The right side uses a pinch bolt and allows the forks to self-align on the axle. Tighten the axle (with spacers correctly installed) and tighten pinch bolt. How did you drain your fork oil? |

Flipped the forks (vs. the whole bike) upside down for a couple hours and compressed the inner tubes to work all the oil out. No, didn't buy a set of allen wrenches, already have everything thru 6mm. Just bought an 8mm allen bit to use with my ratchet set... The fill took 1.5-2 oz shy of a full quart. |

I'd still like to see the upside down bike method :) I don't remember the equivalence but the manual states 441 ml for each fork (why THAT number I can only guess) so 441 x 2 = 882. What's a quart, 9xx? Can't remember. But, did you drink the whole 6-pack? That's the most important tool ;D |

Title: Re: New fork oil thread Post by barry68v10 on 11/09/07 at 17:26:55 ...or... 1.057 qts = 1 liter = 1000 ml :D |

True dat! I figure, based on the design, there's really no penalty for a little too much oil, or too little for that matter. More should make it a little stiffer, and less should make it a little softer... |
