Title: one hot savage
Post by oksavage on 10/29/07 at 13:09:55

ok, I'm new to my savage an 86', I was wondering how do you know if the engine is running hot?  The other day I started it up let it warm-up and noticed a hot smell.  Also, some smoke coming from around the exhaust port.  Is it ok? I cleaned the fins good but I know I need to replace that oil plug.  How do you check the temp?  Any insight would be great.

Thanks

Did you check your radiator level?  Did your "idiot" like come on?  You must be OK then...   ;D

Mine always feels like it's running "hot".  Other's can better answer the smoke issue, but I've seen smoke coming up in that area after I've added oil.  Tends to spill in that area if you are not careful.

only one sure fire way to tell if it's hot... watch the exhaust header, if it turns blue it's hot.  the bluer the hotter.

another way is to adjust your valves perfectly, when it ticks, it's hot.

Other than that, get yourself a hand held ir meter at harbour freight.

Did you burn your leg on it after a ten minute ride? That's hot. Oh wait, that was me, sorry.

Mine runs hot too, with a blue header to prove it. No worries, keep thumping.
