Title: unknown fuse/starter problem Post by Robertomoe on 10/22/07 at 18:34:03 Ive been having problems with my fuses lately. The second fuse (as far as I know, controls the starting process of the bike) kept blowing. The first time, it had a 15 amp fuse in there, so it didnt surprise me that it blew. The second time, i was in a very bad place to break down, but I kept cool and ripped the tab off a random can in the gutter and was able to break off a piece that I was able to put in the fuse to connect the leads. The bike's been running that way for the weekend. I was at a station and picked up a fuse. When I replaced it, the new fuse popped as soon as I tried starting. When starting with the jury-rigged fuse, the starter hesitates at first, but it kicks in pretty quickly right after. Any thoughts? |
Title: Re: unknown fuse/starter problem Post by Trippah on 10/22/07 at 19:59:24 As always, some bio info helpful. age of bike, milage.. seems like you're drawing to much juice (to state the obvious) for a 15 amp fuse. We should let those who know about this stuf jump in, but if the starter works with the tin can, has it been a long time since tune up? Good luck. |

Title: Re: unknown fuse/starter problem Post by Robertomoe on 10/23/07 at 11:32:15 oh, sorry after I found out I had a 15 amp fuse, I replaced it with a 20 the bike is a 1996 with 35k its been a long time since this bike had attention- the valves click, the bolts fall off, wiring connections were loose when I got it |
Title: Re: unknown fuse/starter problem Post by verslagen1 on 10/23/07 at 11:35:44 I wouldn't be surprised if the starter needed an overhaul. No experience on this one, but I have cleaned vdub generators before for renewed performance. |
Title: Re: unknown fuse/starter problem Post by T-Mack1 on 10/23/07 at 13:21:14 Robertomoe, Like Thumperclone says, Power to the starter comes un-fused from the battery via the relay (sometimes called a starter solenoid, ..... but not by Suzuki) which is under the seat. If you're blowing fuses when hitting the start button, look to a wiring problem or other component in the starting circuit (decompression solenoid, the controller, or the wiring to the handle bar switch. T.Mack EDIT: IF you don't have time to solve immediately, run to the local auto parts store and buy a thermal reset fuse, also call circuit breaker or thingy. Leaving the temp fix in could cause a fire!!!!! |
Title: Re: unknown fuse/starter problem Post by verslagen1 on 10/23/07 at 13:30:54 When you say hesitate, do you mean the starter stalls at first like when the battery is low? Or do you push button and wait for a bit before it kicks in? |
Title: Re: unknown fuse/starter problem Post by Robertomoe on 10/23/07 at 17:13:30 let me get a camera set up. Ive got an aftermarket microphone which should really be able to pick up the sound |
Title: Re: unknown fuse/starter problem Post by verslagen1 on 10/23/07 at 23:26:57 Had a thought... if the decompression was out of adjustment, might not be enough decompression to allow the starter to work. |
