I know you don't want a slew of savages visiting, but your profile gives very little hint as to your location.  Perhaps a state might help us find someone who can lend a guiding hand/reliable service person etc. But doing it yourself is "more fun" :o

I used to have alot of backfiring before I put my bike iin for its first service, now I rarely have it.
However, I love my 01 savage! I bought it in June with 493 miles on it in mint condition!
I took the safety course & have been riding every chance I get. I put 3500 miles on it !!!
Just changed the oil & looks like it might be put away for the winter. The weather here in Pa finally changed to Autumm!   I am hoping to get a few afternoon rides in!!

Well justin ,she's missing out not contacting you to help. ( or doing the whole mod.) :) :)

Thanks for every one's quick response, thinking about waiting until I have my first service done before I modify the carb.I think most of my problem stems from the fact that I drilled out the brads and knocked out most of the stuff inside the muffler except for whats behind the screen, couldn't reach that.I like the sound,I'm left with, but it seems to have made the backfire worse, maybe I should'nt have messed it, but I like people to hear me coming and now they sure do, lol, especially when it backfires. Justin,do you think I should wait until after my 600 mile service?

I always took a long drill bit and drilled out the back plate .Suzuki are only a little louder. I had a honda vx 600 it sound like straigh pipes. YOU are leaner now but because its louder you hear the backfire more.

It was too lean before. If you opened the exhaust that much, you better get it jetted right away.

I hope this isnt a duplicate post, but I cant go back right now. Connection ois so slow it would take too long.

YTour bike was too lean before you messed with the exhaust. What you have done to the exhaust may have some impact on warranty. It certainly needs jetted now, I mean now as in Right Now, it is way too lean.

Let me preface my response by stating the disclaimer first.  I don't know much about the subject, other than bikes in California are set up to run lean, and I have heard people say that the "leanness" of the mixture contributes to the backfiring.

I was in a shop, talking to a motorcycle tech who used to work on S-40s.  He said that there is no way to get rid of the pop.  Whether he is right or not, I don't know.  He knows alot about the subject, but he may have been subtely steering me toward the other brand that he now works on.

I personally try to enjoy the sound of our crude little engines.  They remind me of what early motorcycles must have sounded like.

Carole,  when I feel the shaking of the engine, and I hear the occasional pop (usually when letting off of the trottle), I say to myself ....Whaa-hoo...now that is what a real "motor-sickle" should sound like...!!!

Carol, it would help the folks know how to respond if they knew the extent of the mods made so far.

Mine doesn't pop at all.

It took a supertrapp to do it though.

Gentle pooh at shutdown,  Ocasional  rrrap! at an enthusiastic gearchange.
