Title: gs 550 on 2000 suzi
Post by cookiemonster on 09/27/07 at 20:47:12

I happen to have an 82 gs 550 that im thinking might fit on my 2000 savage frame. Jugs are short.. Head is low..Frame looks to fit between the pipes. Four carbs look a bit long though. I would love to just smoke the Hardleys that seem to be attracted to suzi any where i go. Any one done this or heard of the convo being done??

This is not something that comes up every day, or week... but the Savage frame 'might' be up to handling the power.

I'd be very concerned about how the drive line (chain conversion I suppose?) was going to line up.

Also hope you are a very good welder, or have some cheap help in that area. You really need someone with at least MIG; or better yet TIG welding gear. Only someone truly talented can weld on a MC frame with a stick and not make a dangerous mess of it.

I am a very good welder as it is part of my trade.  And i have access to tig and mig welders, although i would probably use the mig.(Easier to weld w/o a jig)

As for the chain alignment this is a concern. I dont want to butcher the bike as it is nearly perfect.

Original is in top shape. I ride everyday rain or shine. Im just sick of those Duals givin me grief. Would love to see thier faces at the next red light with the W T F expression.
Besides the 550 was a freebie! Might as well feed the hotrodder in me!!!!!     8)

Good Luck with the motor conversion! I'd say with perseverence and creativity it's a do-able project! Read all the post in the Tech Section re; chain conversion for guidance too.
Please keep us updated on your progress (pics'd be nice!)!
and hey if ya don't wanna experiment with your current Savage, pick up a cheap salvage with a blown engine or somethin'?

Ive considered that myself. We have a large salvage yard not too far away. I have the complete gs so i have something to go by measurement wise. Gonna get out the old pen and pad tomorrow and get a few specs.

I don't know what kind of Harleys are blowing you away, but ...
a properly tuned and tweaked Savage will eat Sporty 883s and some 1200s all day long. Part of the reason is that a sporty weighs close to 600 pounds and you can get your savage down to about 315.
Check out the threads on carb and exhaust mods:
White spacer, re-jet, air filter mods, desnorkel, drill airbox, muffler mods, like sporty/Dyna muffler, iridium spark plug (a must) etc. There are more advanced things like a custom carb from lancer, Supertrapp or Jardine exhaust, K&N cone air filter and you will be amazed what you'll be blowing away!!
