Title: stock IRC
Post by bill67 on 09/30/07 at 13:10:49

About how many miles do the stock IRC get before they need replacing?

I got about 5K on the rear and 10K on the front.
There's about a 3K difference between "should" be replaced and NEEDS to be replaced.  It doesn't need to be replace until the cords are worn thru.

My IRCs are pretty slick despite only 4500 miles on them.  They have lots of tread left, but don't do well on wet roads.  On the other hand, they are the tires that came stock on the bike in 1998 :o so maybe they weren't so bad when they were new...

I got about 8K out of the Dunlop D404 rear.  Others claim more mileage or stickiness from other tires.    I have an IRC Durotour on the rear now (came with the wheel) and it is wearing as well as the D404 -- better than the stock IRC.

I think I'll stick with the Dunlops -- $109 + shipping for F & R.  Better half is talking about getting tire mounting & ballancing equipment.

everybody complains about the stock IRC, but I got about 15K on a rear / I bought the bike with about 7K and put slightly less than 8/. I was going to keep it a little longer, but there was a looong trip comming and I did not want to get stuck for a tire somewhere in the corn  fields. Not too long ago I bought an  03 Savage with slightly over 7K and the rear tire was just about gone /the former owner was probably 230-240 lb/
I think that the weight of the rider matters a lot. I am about 160 lb and may be this is the reason for the longer life that I squeeze out of the tires.

If You do get that tire equipment,, please start a thread & tell about where you got it & such. I am interested. At $30.00 bucks a tire for mounting, after buying it there, thats a bit stiff..

Just don't buy it from Harbor Freight. The tire changing mashine that needs an attachment for motorcycle tires is a complete waste of money. The only part of it, that works OK is the bead bracker. I had one and I gave it away. I was using tire irons before I got my COATS 220.
Now I saw they have for $29 a bead-bracker only and this might be pretty good idea.

The machine theyn use at the shop really is just a bead breaker & has 4 jaws that spread & secure the rim. Hten, the guy slaps the tire on it & uses tire bars to put it on. Once the wheel is secure, its a piece O cake. That thing has to be bolted to the slab, tho.

I rode the stock IRC 5,000 miles, but it was a sorry riding piece O crap the last 1,000. It was also never good at holding the road, not new, not mid life, not ever. That was a good thing. It caused me to be a bit more careful while I was relearning to ride. Then, stuck a sticky tire on & suddenly, I was a lot better rider, well, I could corner faster, cuz I wasnt slipping around on a snotty tire.

i replaced the front at 5600 miles, the rear had already been replaced. the front tire was 10 years old, hard and dry, slid around like a greased pig. the bike wears a dunlop K555 rear and a dunlop 404 front now.

That's the one I'm looking at.  $100 to be able to handle automotive and motorcycle tires.  The Coats is m/c only and $900?

My stock IRC rear tire started showing the wear bars at about 8500 miles.

I'm gonna replace it w/ another OEM IRC.  Why?  Well, it's cheap and I only ride the bike about 1500 miles per year.  If I get a good tire, I'm afraid it will age out before it wears out.

FWIW, I use the Harbor Freight tire changing stand.  I basically use it as a stand to hold the wheel so I can use my tire irons.  The stand gets the wheel off the ground and saves my back.

The rear tire of the Savage is easy to get on and off the rim, especially when you compare it to the rear tire of my GL1800....that one's a bear!

Tonight I just ran over 5200ish and it had 1600 on it when I bought it in very late FEB. I put the 200+ miles on it in just the past 2 days, and thats taking it easy we usually ride around a lot. The rear is getting flat in the middle and the front well they both just SUCK really bad. I'm so ready to get new tires esp before Sturgis!!

All of them.  There is no one best place for everything.   I got my Dunlops ('bout three years ago) from MAW (http://www.accwhse.com/#BM).  Just picked up a set of Metzelers from Dennis Kirk (http://www.denniskirk.com/).  Where you go depends on what you want.

FWIW....

If you live in the Colorado Springs area, I suggest you buy your tires at Apex Sports.  They are always within 10% of internet prices and you get to inspect the tire before you hand over your credit card.

You can even drop off your old tire there after you are done changing it.

Don't know what they charge for mounting, though.

About 8k on the rear - don't try this, the threads looked like they had been drawn on with a marker.
The front, 8k also, but the threads were great, until I looked in them and saw new threads developing inside the factory threads - dry rot - I could see the cracks get bigger as I inflated the tire 2-5 lbs. The tire was about 9 years old.

I had cord showing at 7k on the rear tire, fronts had tread left but were cupped.  I have 3k miles on Bridgestone Spitfires and so far so good.

I changed them both at 9700 miles.  The rear was mostly bald in the center, but no cords were showing or anything.  I probably had another 1000 on the front before it was bald.  I ride a lot and it's not like I've been gentle on them.  I'm an angry driver so there's a lot of speeding up, quick stopping, and maneuvering around the $%#%#%#^ that I encounter on the road.  >:(  I put the IRCs back on and I'm gonna see if I just got a good pair or if they really are just a quality tire.
